Buffy2ville, a DeviantArt user, has unveiled an exceptionally lifelike fan art featuring Tom Welling in the role of an older Superman adorned in the suit. For a decade, Welling portrayed Clark Kent on Smallville, the WB/CW series. The animated GIF presents a modern-day Welling, aged 48, with the iconic side part hairstyle reminiscent of Superman and a reinterpretation of the Superman costume that resembles the one used in Zack Snyder’s DC Extended Universe films such as “Man of Steel” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”. The scene depicts Welling flying through a cityscape that strongly suggests Metropolis.

View Urgent ForecastFor devoted Smallville fans, the animated image serves as a realization of their long-held dreams, as they often lamented the “no tights, no flights” rule for the show’s main character over time. The depiction of a modern-day Tom Welling in a suit of tights and flight is the essence of Smallville fantasies. Strictly adhering to Smallville’s portrayal of Clark Kent not wearing the signature red cape, creators Al Gough and Miles Millar chose to focus on the journey of how Clark evolved into the renowned superhero.
Welling Fan Art Flies in the Face of Smallville’s Cardinal Rule
After Clark graduated from high school and presumably college in the series, the rule “no flights, no tights” became more challenging to maintain. Instead of being a fresh and guiding principle for the show, it became somewhat of an obstacle by Season 9, as the writers attempted to work around it. They introduced citizens of Metropolis calling Clark “The Blur,” and even gave him two stylish jackets that were clearly not capes.
In the last episode of Smallville, Tom Welling’s character, Clark, rushed to the peak of The Daily Planet building in a critical moment to disarm an elevator bomb located uptown. Just before he saved the day, we caught a glimpse of his Superman suit beneath his dress shirt and tie. This was the closest viewers would ever get to seeing Welling wear the supersuit.
This Fan Art May Be the Only Time Fans See Welling in the Supersuit in Live-Action
In the continuation of “Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part Two,” it was once again the familiar flannel shirts gracing my character, and this Clark had hung up the cape of Superman. To my counterparts in “Superman & Lois” – Clark (Tyler Hoechlin), Lois (Bitsie Tulloch), Iris West-Allen (Candice Patton), and Lex Luthor (Jon Cryer) – I confided that I traded my powers for the precious bond of family with Lois.
Another way we might observe Welling in Superman’s blue pants and red cloak could be through an upcoming animated sequel series he’s collaborating on with his Smallville co-star, Michael Rosenbaum. However, due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America Strike and recent changes at Warner Bros., the future of this Smallville sequel is unclear, even though Rosenbaum stated that “the entire [Smallville] cast wants to be a part of it” according to Deadline.
Smallville is now streaming on Hulu.
