Tomb Raider TV Series Targets Game of Thrones Star as Potential Lara Croft

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say I’m intrigued by the ongoing search for Lara Croft in Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Tomb Raider live-action series. With names like Sophie Turner, Lucy Boynton, Emma Corrin, and Mackenzie Davis being tossed around, it’s a veritable who’s who of young Hollywood.

The live-action Tomb Raider series created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge is currently looking for a suitable actress to portray Lara Croft. As of now, no official casting decision has been made, but it seems Amazon MGM Studios are getting closer to making their choice. According to Deadline’s reports, Sophie Turner, who starred in Game of Thrones and X-Men: Dark Phoenix, will audition for the role. Similarly, Lucy Boynton, known for her roles in Barbie and Bohemian Rhapsody, is also set to test for the part. Sources suggest that Emma Corrin (Deadpool & Wolverine) and Mackenzie Davis (Speak No Evil) are on the studio’s list of potential candidates, but it appears neither have been confirmed for auditions as of yet.

Back in May, Amazon greenlit a complete revival of Tomb Raider as a live-action series. This new series will be part of an extensive universe that encompasses a film and a video game, although specifics about the movie and game are still scarce at this point. The live-action series is set to take center stage for now, being the third adaptation of Tomb Raider in live-action format. Angelina Jolie portrayed the character in two films, while Alicia Vikander starred in a 2018 reboot; Vikander has shown interest in reprising her role, but she hasn’t been linked to the Amazon series yet, which suggests that her return might be improbable.

After the actress playing Lara Croft has been chosen, it’ll be intriguing to observe how the series adapts the character for the big screen. The Tomb Raider movies starring Angelina Jolie had a similar atmosphere to the original games, while Alicia Vikander’s film was influenced by the more realistic 2013 reboot of the game. It remains to be seen whether the Phoebe Waller-Bridge series will strike a balance, combining aspects from different portrayals of Lara Croft. At present, it’s still uncertain.

Among the numerous video game adaptations, Amazon’s live-action series Tomb Raider stands out. Previously this year, the platform launched the hugely successful Fallout, followed by Like a Dragon: Yakuza in this month. In December, Secret Level, an animated series on Amazon, will present multiple video games in a collection format. Not only is Amazon investing heavily in video game adaptations, but studios like Universal and Paramount are also experiencing great success with various gaming properties.

It’s yet uncertain if Tomb Raider can match the success of Fallout, but it’s understandable why Amazon MGM is heavily promoting the series. Fingers crossed they produce a show that will captivate both long-time fans of the franchise and newcomers who haven’t played any of the games before.
