Tomb Raider TV Show Starring Sophie Turner Reportedly Cancelled by Amazon

The report hasn’t been confirmed by Amazon, but it suggests that Turner is occupied with other movies for much of the year, and Jennifer Salke, who initially approved the project, has left her position as head of Amazon Studios. These factors aren’t promising for the project, although it would be disappointing if it doesn’t proceed given that things seemed to be progressing well until now, at least from an external perspective.

Last year in November, it was announced that Turner would play Croft in the series, and earlier in the year, Amazon greenlit the show entirely. Given Amazon’s triumph with their Fallout adaptation last year, they perceived Tomb Raider as a promising gaming franchise that could be their next big hit.

When the news of the Tomb Raider series pickup was revealed at the Upfront presentation, Waller-Bridge was overjoyed to be leading a new chapter for the franchise. “If I could tell my younger self that this was happening, I think she’d burst with excitement,” Waller-Bridge expressed. “Tomb Raider has been a significant part of my life, and I feel incredibly honored to bring it to television alongside such passionate partners. Lara Croft is dear to me, as she is to many others, and I can hardly wait to embark on this journey… even with the bats!

In her conversation with Vanity Fair, Waller-Bridge mentioned that she initially had a certain demeanor and was quite determined in her actions. However, everything shifted when they discovered they could promote her as a sex symbol. Being the adventurous character of Lara Croft, she’s in great shape, often needing to navigate through narrow rock openings. This activity is significantly different if one has larger breasts compared to someone with smaller ones.

Netflix recently debuted a Tomb Raider series featuring Hayley Atwell as Lara Croft. This series seems to align more closely with a unified vision for the character, spanning various media and platforms. A new game from Crystal Dynamics is also in development, but we haven’t seen it yet. Given the creative efforts of Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Sophie Turner on this project, it would be a pity not to explore more Tomb Raider stories in television format.
