Tony Hawk Defends THPS 3+4 Soundtrack Controversy

The classic skateboarding game Tony Hawk‘s Pro Skater, created by Activision, is renowned for a variety of reasons. It played a significant role in making skateboarding popular, launched the careers of numerous pro skaters, and served as an inspiration for countless subsequent games. Yet, it is arguably the game’s soundtrack that resonates most deeply with its players. Each game’s soundtrack stands out individually, boosting tracks like “Superman” by Goldfinger or “96 Quite Bitter Beings” by CKY to iconic status. These tracks hold a special place in the hearts of fans, who had hoped for their return in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4. Unfortunately, it appears that this is not happening.

The duo behind Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 – Activision and Iron Galaxy – have been gradually unveiling the game’s soundtrack. So far, it’s confirmed that 40 tracks will be featured in the upcoming game. Interestingly, just eight of these are carryovers from the original Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and 4 soundtracks. In contrast, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 only lacked three songs across both remade games, while boasting an impressive array of new tunes as well. This discrepancy has sparked some discussion among fans, who fondly remember the music from these specific soundtracks as standouts in the franchise’s history.

One Reddit user expressed concern, saying, “Although I’m excited for new tunes in the game, the balance is really off,” indicating that with only eight songs back from previous soundtracks, it’s significantly less than a fifth of what was originally offered.

Man, I’ve got to say, this new soundtrack just isn’t doing it for me. I’ll stick with the originals, thanks,” I commented on that post. “Seems like they’re still struggling to get that classic feel right in this game series.

In simpler terms, some fans have suggested bringing back certain songs from previous games in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and 4. Songs like “Drunken Lullabies” by Flogging Molly, “Wish” by Alien Ant Farm, and “The Boy Who Destroyed the World” by A.F.I. haven’t been announced yet. However, some bands that were part of the original games are included in the remaster, but not the specific songs from those games themselves. For instance, “The Number of the Beast” from Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 has been replaced with “2 Minutes to Midnight.” Skateboarding legend and game namesake Tony Hawk addressed the criticism about the soundtrack for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4.

Hawk shared on Instagram that he selected various tracks from the soundtracks of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and 4. He believes part of the appeal is the excitement of discovery, so he invites everyone to listen and enjoy the journey, with more familiar and fresh tunes to come.
