Tony Hawk Says "There Will Be a Future" for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Series

As a gamer who grew up in the 90s and early 2000s, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia hearing about Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater coming back. I remember staying up late, playing THPS on my PlayStation, perfecting tricks, and listening to those iconic soundtracks. It was more than just a game; it was a cultural phenomenon that shaped an entire generation of gamers.

Tony Hawk has personally assured fans that the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater video game series will carry on in some form following his statement. After the launch of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 in 2020, it appeared as if Activision had no further plans for the franchise. However, an earlier announcement stating a remaster of THPS 3 and 4 was underway at Activision has reportedly collapsed internally. Fortunately, Tony Hawk’s revelation offers fans fresh optimism about the future of the series.

To mark the 25-year milestone of the first release of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, Tony Hawk himself posted on Instagram to commemorate the franchise and its impact on his personal life. In his post, Hawk admitted that he initially believed the game would only appeal to other skaters, but it ended up becoming a successful series as we know it today. Throughout his message, Hawk reflected on the origins of the property and hinted at future developments, suggesting that there will be some sort of revival in the works.

25 years ago today, Tony Hawk shared the original “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater”. As he stated, the primary goal for the game was to offer an enjoyable experience for skateboarders. He never expected it to outgrow its niche audience and achieve massive success, even impacting the popularity of skateboarding and potentially shaping the development of skate tricks. Without a doubt, it significantly altered the trajectory of his life, allowing him to make a living by skateboarding up until now.

He dedicated himself wholeheartedly to every part of this project, as he felt we were crafting something truly extraordinary. The end result left him incredibly proud, not just of the projects themselves, but also their soundtracks. He expressed gratitude towards Activision, Neversoft (rest in peace), and everyone who played Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater back then. Though he’s not allowed to hint at any future developments regarding the series, he assured us that there will indeed be a continuation.

In terms of what the future might hold, it seems reasonable to consider a remastered version of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and 4. Given the massive success of THPS 1+2, another remaster would likely be advantageous for Activision, as it would allow them to keep costs minimal while maximizing potential revenue.

It’s worth noting that the last innovative attempt with the series by Activision was “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5”, often criticized as one of the worst games in the franchise. Instead of repeating such a risky move, it seems more prudent for Activision to revive and modernize an earlier, popular game instead.
