As a gamer who’s been skating virtual ramps since the dawn of the millennium, the news about Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater potentially making a comeback has me doing a 360 flip with delight! Ever since the release of THPS1 + 2, I’ve been longing for that adrenaline rush that only skating through Warehouse, School II, or Downhill Jam could provide. And now, it seems like my dreams might just be coming true!
Back in September 1999, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater revolutionized both the video game industry and professional skateboarding. The game was a hit, garnering praise from critics and gamers alike, which led to various adaptations, follow-ups, and revamped versions. It’s been four years since Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 dropped, but it looks like something fresh is brewing. Recently, Tony Hawk made an appearance on Mythical Kitchen, where he hinted at renewed discussions with Activision regarding the series. Although he didn’t share many details, his enthusiasm for revisiting the franchise was evident.
As a gaming enthusiast, let me share some exhilarating news: I’ve had another chat with the folks at Activision! It’s like a dream come true for me.
Scherer: “Get out of town. The boys are back.”
Hawk: “We’re working on something. This is the first time I’ve said that publicly.”
Scherer proposed a future game might feature contact lenses that allow skating. Hawk chuckled, implying there’d be no such thing, but declined to share specifics. Most enthusiasts would likely be content with a fresh installment in the series, or even rumors of remasters for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and 4. However, we can only speculate what might transpire as discussions with Activision continue.
Last year, Xbox completed its acquisition of Activision. For quite some time, Activision has primarily dedicated its development resources to Call of Duty, with little else in focus. During the acquisition, Xbox expressed interest in reviving many of Activision’s older titles, including franchises that have been dormant for years. As of now, it remains to be seen if this will indeed happen, but whispers suggest that several Activision properties could potentially see a resurgence. There are rumors about remasters for Transformers: War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron, a new Spyro the Dragon game, and now speculation about something related to Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater! Here’s hoping this marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Activision games.
