Top 10 Comic Books Rising in Value for the Week of 09/09/24

1 Four Children Enter a Bank | Black Mask Studios | April 2016

4th Installment of “The Ultimates” Series – September 2024: Issue #2 | Characters: Marvel’s Dr. Doom | Writer: Deniz Camp:

3: DEADPOOL’S SECRET SECRET WARS #2 – CHRIS BACHALO – GWENPOOL | MARVEL | JUNE 2015: The affection for Gwenpool continues to expand! In this issue, she makes her first cover appearance, though she doesn’t actually show up in the story. This comic is a significant one for fans of Gwenpool, especially those who have recently discovered her thanks to Fortnite. While it’s slightly pricier than some of her earlier popular issues, enthusiasts are gradually amassing these key issues. We’ve seen a high sale of $300 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current market value of $135 for a near-mint (NM) raw edition.

4: “Unveiling Popeye’s Lost Eye: Anime Style Adventure by Trevor Richardson – August 2024 | A Video Game Salute:

5: NYX #1 – STANLEY ARTGERM LAU – 2ND PRINT – VIRGIN (1:25) | MARVEL | SEPTEMBER 2024: Many fans eagerly anticipated this comic due to the initial appearance of Krakoan, once known as Hellion, and the hint of new X-Men characters in the future. However, it was the variant covers featuring X-23 that were particularly selling fast. Nevertheless, the second print 1:25 variant by Stanley Artgerm took center stage! It’s uncommon to encounter a ratio cover for a second print, let alone one as sought-after as this one. Given X-23’s recent popularity due to Deadpool and Wolverine, it’s not surprising that this variant has been selling at a high price. We recorded a sale of $300 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current market value of $93 for a near mint raw edition.

The Avengers Vol.1 #55 (August 1968, Marvel Comics) marks the debut of Ultron, a character who gained significant popularity approximately ten years ago, thanks to his role in the film “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” Despite widespread belief that Ultron had been written off, it was recently announced that James Spader, the voice actor for the character, will reprise his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The specific context of his return is unknown; whether it’s a live-action or animated project remains to be seen. This news has sparked interest among collectors, with a CGC 9.4 copy selling at a high price of $650 and a VG raw currently valued at $35.

7: HOWARD THE DUCK #1 (Marvel, November 2015): While it may not be widely recognized, this comic is often cited as the initial, comprehensive appearance of Gwenpool. There’s some disagreement about this, but its affordability makes it an attractive option for fans to explore her debut. Initially appearing in a minor role during the early issues, she later emerged as a significant character, eventually earning her own series. We found a CGC 9.8 copy selling at a peak price of $98, while a raw, very fine version currently goes for around $17.

8: THE UNCANNY X-MEN VOL.1 #274 | MARVEL | MARCH 1991: As a devoted fan, I couldn’t resist the allure of revisiting an old favorite! This book got a facsimile release last week, but it was Jim Lee’s masterful artwork and the compelling relationship between Rogue and Magneto that had fans clamoring for it. Yet, for some of us, the real thing is what truly mattered. The aftermarket sales have been booming, breathing new life into a comic that might otherwise have gone unnoticed. I’ve seen a CGC 9.8 copy fetch as high as $140 and a raw VF version selling for $14.

“The Amazing Spider-Man Volume 2 #36 (December 2001, Marvel Comics)”: This comic book is significant enough to be mentioned annually, yet some may not understand its importance. Known as the “9/11 issue,” it was published following the tragic events of that day and reflected the emotions of the community during that time. Seeing superheroes and villains unite in a crisis provided comfort to many. The spirit of unity that swept across the nation after the disaster is aptly portrayed in this book. Though over two decades have passed, those who lived through it will never forget, and this comic serves as a poignant reminder. We’ve seen a high sale for a CGC 9.8 copy at $359 and a current NM raw price of $54.

10: TRINITY SPECIAL: WORLD’S FINEST #1 – SAOWEE (1:50) | DC | SEPTEMBER 2024:

As a passionate gamer and avid comic collector, I’ve been noticing the gradual influx of manga-style art into the comic community. A prime example is the stunning cover by artist Saowee for this particular book. With a 1:50 variant, it boasts the highest ratio for this title, making it quite elusive and hard to acquire. Yet, the growing online fanbase of Saowee has proven their skills to be a perfect fit for this book. Its limited edition status, debut issue, and manga-inspired aesthetic have all contributed to its popularity in the aftermarket. I’ve seen an NM copy sell for a whopping $160, and the current NM raw is valued at $151.
