Top 10 Comic Books Rising in Value in the Last Week Include X-Men and a Lot of Venom

1: Issue 3 of VENOM: June 2018 – RYAN STEGMAN – Marvel Comics: Recently, Sony unveiled the final trailer for Venom: The Last Dance. This trailer emphasized the film’s cosmic aspects and hinted at the appearance of major Marvel Comics antagonist, Knull. There have been whispers suggesting that Marvel was planning a realistic Spider-Man 4 movie, while Sony was aiming for a multiverse film featuring Knull and Venom. With the release of this trailer, the latter theory seems more plausible. Kevin Feige, from Marvel, commented, “When we said we wanted Spider-Man to be more grounded, we simply forgot to mention that the ground was from an alien planet in another dimension.” At this point, neither studio has confirmed if Knull will appear in future films. In the meantime, peruse your local comic book stores’ back issues, as this title has seen a decline in value recently. Remember, when it comes to Sony-related comics, always exercise caution. They haven’t had the best history of preserving their movie-related keys at peak value! We found a high sale price of $280 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current NM raw price of $140.

2024: Marvel Comics Collaborates with Whatnot for Marvel Comic Trading Packs – X-MEN ’97 #1 – ROB LIEFELD | MARVEL | SEPTEMBER 2024: If you didn’t know, Marvel Comics teamed up with Whatnot to introduce their Marvel Comic Trading Packs. Each pack had four designs, containing three random X-MEN ’97 #1 variants from artists like Ariel Olivetti, Rob Liefeld, Salvador Larroca, and Stephen Segovia. The pack designs were the result of collaboration between Marvel and these skilled artists. According to sales tracking, Liefeld’s pack design was the most popular among fans. When this innovative marketing strategy was announced, comic book enthusiasts had mixed opinions. However, the sales figures clearly indicate that the strategy was a hit. Not only were the blind bags flying off the shelves at record speeds, but they also gained traction in the secondary market. This promotional event was initially limited to Whatnot’s community, but it remains to be seen if Marvel Comics will make these blind bags available at your local comic shops as well. We recorded a high sale of $200 for an NM copy and a current NM raw of $188. Keep in mind that we track each individual cover and sealed mystery pack separately, so the overall sales volume is significantly higher. Liefeld’s blind-back cover seemed to be the most sought-after among all the offerings.

3: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #23 (Marvel, January 2015): The recently released Venom: The Last Dance trailer is stirring up quite the buzz, and this comic issue might be contributing to that hype. This issue marks the first appearance of Klyntar, or the symbiote planet, and gives a quick peek at Knull and his throne. Some fans predict that the story will primarily focus on Earth’s invasion, leaving the symbiote planet as a minor aspect. Although VENOM #3 has a larger circulation, this book is more readily available and less expensive, making it an attractive key comic to secure. We found a CGC 9.8 copy selling for $100 and a NM raw currently priced at $17.

4: VENOM #3 – RYAN STEGMAN – 3RD REPRINT | MARVEL | JUNE 2018: Although the primary print is at the top, don’t overlook this third reprint! It might be lower on the list, but it’s the second most valuable reissue. The reason is that many consider it as the first cover debut of the Symbiote God. However, a less favorable first cover appearance can be found in the second reprint of VENOM #4, which was released earlier. Collectors find this issue more appealing because the third print had a limited run, making it harder to obtain. We’ve seen a high sale price of $400 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current NM raw at $165.

6th Issue of Thor: God of Thunder by Esad Ribic, published by Marvel in March 2013: The sales of this book experienced a substantial increase when it was revealed that Gorr the God Butcher would be the primary antagonist in Thor: Love and Thunder. However, following the film’s underwhelming response, the book’s popularity dwindled and is rarely seen. Besides being the origin story of Gorr, this comic also features a cameo by Knull, which has led to a resurgence in its interest on the secondary market. We observed it selling for around $180 for a CGC 9.8 copy and currently trading at approximately $57 for a Near Mint raw version.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but exclaim my excitement over the latest addition to my collection: Venom #4 from July 2018! This comic has undeniably claimed its spot on my Top Ten list, even though Knull didn’t quite manage to take over Earth in “Venom: The Last Dance”. But let me tell you, this villain has truly ruled in the pages of this book!

7: VENOM #3 – MOLINA (1:25) | MARVEL | JUNE 2018: Comic enthusiasts who love Jorge Molina and Venom are scrambling to acquire this issue, as it’s become quite a challenge to find. Originally offered as a retailer incentive for VENOM #3, this variant is now one of the rarest to locate. The near-mint condition value of this comic book is close to double that of Cover A. It seems probable that its worth could increase if more copies were available at a lower cost. For now, it appears that this elusive book will find its way into the hands of dedicated comic collectors who are prepared to pay a premium for a significant Venom issue. We’ve seen a high sale price of $385 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current market value of $223 in near-mint condition.

8: Issue 3 of VENOM by artist Skan, published by Marvel in June 2018 from Frankie’s Comics and Golden Apple Comics – this comic features Knull’s first appearance, with Skan’s variant causing a stir in the aftermarket. A store exclusive collaboration, it also has a virgin variant, but the standard trade copy appears more readily available. We’ve seen a high sale of $125 for a CGC 9.8 graded copy and a current market price of $63 for a raw NM edition.

9: VENOM #3 – SECOND EDITION (JUNE 2018) | MARVEL: The second printings of Venom #3 comics are currently in high demand. Although it’s not at the top of the list, its sales have significantly increased following the trailer release. Despite not being the most sought-after reprint of issue #3, it remains valuable for collectors of Knull. We’ve seen a peak sale price of $95 for a CGC 9.8 graded copy and a current market value of $51 for raw, near mint condition.

10: UNCANNY X-MEN #1 – DAVID MARQUEZ – 2ND PRINT (1:25) | MARVEL | SEPTEMBER 2024: The comic book universe has been delivering fantastic X-Men content while they’re taking a backseat in the MCU. In the recent UNCANNY X-MEN #1, we were introduced to a new mutant team called The Outliers. As is often the case in comics, a plea for assistance gets misconstrued, leading to a fight. Once the misunderstanding is resolved, the X-Men will accept this new superhero squad. This second printing retailer incentive marks the first cover appearance of this team. Given the success of Knull keys, second prints and cover appearances are highly sought after by collectors! We’ve seen an NM copy sell for $150 and a current NM raw at $132.
