Top 10 Heart-Wrenching Game of Thrones Deaths That Shocked Fans

Over the course of eight thrilling seasons on HBO from 2011 to 2019, numerous beloved characters perished in the epic tale of “Game of Thrones“, inspired by George R.R. Martin’s unfinished book series. This groundbreaking show delved into multiple storylines within Westeros, ranging from the chilling presence of the White Walkers beyond the Wall to the fierce struggle for the Iron Throne in the Seven Kingdoms. Known for its ruthless treatment of characters, “Game of Thrones” left fans heartbroken repeatedly as their favorite characters met untimely ends. Some of these deaths were so shocking that they left viewers traumatized.

Arranged from the least poignant to the most tragic, here are the ten character demises in “Game of Thrones” that were the saddest.

10. Olenna Tyrell

Among the most unforgettable character deaths on “Game of Thrones” is that of Lady Olenna Tyrell (portrayed by Diana Rigg). In Season 7, she was defeated by Jaime Lannister’s (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) troops at Highgarden. Instead of enduring a cruel demise, Olenna was given the choice to drink poison, which she accepted after consuming it and only then confessing to Jaime that she had orchestrated the death of Joffrey (Jack Gleeson), Jaime’s son with Cersei (Lena Headey). One of the most memorable lines in “Game of Thrones” is Olenna’s request to Jaime: “Tell Cersei. I want her to know it was me.” In a series where she never hesitated to criticize the Lannisters, this moment marked her final act of defiance.

In her sharp-tongued charm, Olenna became beloved by “Game of Thrones” viewers, and her demise was a mix of sorrow and satisfaction because she was a likable character amidst an array of detestable figures. Regrettably, Olenna didn’t get to spend the rest of her days in tranquility and joy.

9. Ned Stark

Without a doubt, one of the most startling deaths in “Game of Thrones” occurred when Ned Stark (Sean Bean) was unexpectedly executed for treason in the second-last episode of Season 1. This gruesome public beheading ignited war in the North and set off a brutal power struggle that would haunt the Seven Kingdoms throughout the series. Despite his short time on the show, Ned elicited much empathy due to his unjust accusation of treachery against the late King Robert (Mark Addy). His unwavering sense of honor and integrity made him one of the realm’s rare honest men, making his untimely end all the more heartbreaking.

8. Margaery Tyrell

In the Season 6 finale, Margaery Tyrell (played by Natalie Dormer) suffered a heartbreaking fate as Cersei Lannister detonated wildfire within the Great Sept of Baelor, causing a massive explosion that took the lives of many, including Margaery’s brother Loras (Finn Jones), and numerous others who were present at Cersei’s trial led by the High Sparrow (Jonathan Pryce). Upon realizing Cersei was absent, Margaery sensed treachery and urged everyone to evacuate the Sept, but it was too late for her warning to be effective.

The demise of Margaery was especially painful due to her immense promise as a leader. Despite being compelled to work with the Lannisters after marrying Tommen (Dean-Charles Chapman), she displayed remarkable courage and determination in handling the situation. Furthermore, Margaery bravely supported Loras during his tribulations related to his sexuality. Among the few noble individuals of the Seven Kingdom’s houses, her character shone brightly, making her passing a bitter pill to accept.

7. Hodor

In Season 6 of “Game of Thrones”, Hodor (Kristian Nairn), a character previously known as Wylis, selflessly gave up his life to shield Meera (Ellie Kendrick) and Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) from an attack by wights. His heroic act was aimed at providing Meera and Bran an opportunity to flee. The heartbreaking scene unveiled that the name ‘Hodor’, which was the only word he ever uttered, originated from the phrase “hold the door”. During his childhood, Hodor suffered a seizure that left him with a limited capacity to communicate due to the traumatic experience of his own death.

In the world of Game of Thrones, the heart-wrenching moment when Hodor met his end and the revelation of his sorrowful past was undeniably tragic. At long last, viewers discovered the heartbreaking cause for his name and inability to speak. This selfless hero’s sacrifice remains one of the series’ most heroic acts and one of its saddest deaths.

6. Oberyn Martell

In Season 4 of “Game of Thrones”, Prince Oberyn Martell (played by Pedro Pascal) made a visit to King’s Landing, fueled by a single desire – revenge. He was seeking justice for the atrocious rape and murder of his sister Elia, allegedly committed by Gregor Clegane, also known as The Mountain. Eager to avenge his family, Oberyn offered to fight on Tyrion’s behalf in a trial by combat. This put him face-to-face with his enemy. At first, it seemed like victory was within Oberyn’s grasp when he pierced Clegane with a deadly blow, causing him to fall. However, the Mountain exploited Oberyn’s moment of hesitation, tripping him from behind and brutally crushing his skull, instead of admitting to his crimes as demanded by Oberyn.

In this particular scene, it was both shocking and gruesome, adding a layer of sadness to Oberyn’s demise. Over the course of his brief appearances in ‘Game of Thrones’, Oberyn gained immense popularity due to his cunning wit, captivating allure, and charisma. His unwavering pursuit for justice in the face of his sister’s gruesome murder struck a chord with viewers, as they could relate to his thirst for vengeance against the Lannisters and the Mountain. Consequently, witnessing Oberyn’s last moments was heart-wrenchingly difficult, considering how close he had come to accomplishing his goal.

5. Catelyn Stark

In the third season of ‘Game of Thrones’, Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley) suffered an appalling demise at the wedding of her brother Edmure Tully (Tobias Menzies) to one of Lord Walder Frey’s (David Bradley) daughters. Frey, in secret collusion with the Lannisters, had treacherously orchestrated the massacre of Catelyn, Robb Stark, and their allies at a feast held at the Twins. This shocking incident, known as the Red Wedding, underscored the unpredictability of loyalty in Westeros, and emphasized that even major characters would not be shielded by the show’s plot immunity.

Catelyn’s tale was filled with sorrow, as she suffered the heart-wrenching loss of her husband, father, and what she believed to be many of her children. Despite her complex nature, she was admirable for her bravery and unwavering devotion to her family. Therefore, witnessing Catelyn’s downfall mere moments after seeing her cherished son perish was utterly devastating.

4. Robb Stark

In the fictional series Game of Thrones, Richard Madden’s character, Robb Stark, held the title King in the North before meeting a tragic end at the Red Wedding. This unfortunate incident claimed not only Robb’s life but also his pregnant wife Talisa (Oona Chaplin) and his mother. The House Frey’s treacherous act against Robb was instigated by his broken promise to marry one of their daughters. Although some might argue that Robb played a part in the wedding turning violent, his death deeply saddened many. After Ned’s (Robb’s father) tragic demise, Robb stepped up to take his place and seek vengeance for his father’s murder. The eldest Stark son quickly gained the affection of Game of Thrones fans, making his untimely passing all the more heart-wrenching.

3. Ygritte

In Season 4 of Game of Thrones, Ygritte (Rose Leslie), found herself fatally wounded in the arms of her past lover Jon Snow (Kit Harrington). During a Wildling attack on Castle Black, Ygritte and Jon encountered each other, but instead of firing an arrow at him, she hesitated. This pause allowed Jon’s young steward Olly (Brenock O’Connor) to shoot an arrow from behind, striking Ygritte. As her life faded, she uttered her famous words, “You know nothing, Jon Snow,” reflecting on their intense past together before passing away. Romance was scarce in Game of Thrones, and Jon and Ygritte were among the rare couples whose love was worth supporting. Moreover, Ygritte’s death served to highlight the senseless cycle of violence between the Night’s Watch and the Wildlings. Despite her young age, she became another casualty in the long-standing conflict instigated by the powerful figures of the Seven Kingdoms, who went to great lengths to isolate those beyond the Wall.

2. Missandei

In the world of “Game of Thrones”, Missandei (played by Nathalie Emmanuel), who was originally a slave in Astapor, became one of Daenerys Targaryen’s (Emilia Clarke) most trusted companions following her rescue. Acting as both translator and advisor to Daenerys, Missandei was often near peril throughout Daenerys’ journey for the Iron Throne. Sadly, she met her end in Season 8. Captured by Euron Greyjoy’s (Pilou Asbæk) troops during an ambush, Missandei was brought to King’s Landing and ordered publicly executed by Cersei Lannister in the presence of Daenerys and her allies.

In my opinion, Missandei’s heartrending demise was marred by the underutilization of her character’s untapped potential. With the budding romance between Missandei and Grey Worm (played brilliantly by Jacob Anderson), there were endless possibilities for her future, especially under Daenerys’ reign if it had endured beyond a fleeting moment. The portrayal of Missandei’s death as a catalyst for Daenerys’ tragic decline felt disheartening, as it transformed this well-established character into nothing more than a chess piece in the Targaryen queen’s saga instead of an individual with her own rich and developed narrative arc.

1. Shireen Baratheon

In the fifth season of “Game of Thrones”, Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane), despite being her father, sacrificed his daughter Shireen (Kerry Ingram) by burning her alive. He did this under the belief that this human sacrifice to the Lord of Light would secure him victory and the Iron Throne when he felt it slipping away. The scene where Shireen was bound to a pyre and set alight by Melisandre (Carice Van Houten) is often cited as one of the most disturbing in “Game of Thrones”. It was truly appalling and enraging to witness, especially as Shireen begged for help but no power stepped in to halt Stannis’ madness. The cruel act inflicted upon a child was beyond words, it was heart-wrenchingly shocking. Although Shireen was a minor character on “Game of Thrones”, her death scene left viewers utterly devastated.

All seasons of Game of Thrones are available to stream on Max.
