As a devoted comics enthusiast, I can’t help but express my admiration for the iconic Teen Titans. Initially debuting as the junior league, these young superheroes have evolved and transformed throughout the years, carving out an essential role within the DC universe pantheon. The Teen Titans have been a breeding ground for some of the most remarkable adolescent heroes ever to grace the comic book pages, captivating fans and providing endless entertainment for generations.
Though they may not hold the same prestigious rank as teams such as the Justice League in the heroic hierarchy now — the Teen Titans have experienced their fair share of challenges since the New 52 era — their contributions to the comic book world remain unparalleled. They continue to introduce fresh, exciting new characters to fans, keeping the spirit of superhero storytelling alive and vibrant.
From their inception, the Teen Titans have always been abundant with members, a trait that remains constant throughout their history. They’ve nurtured young superheroes into legendary figures, with many of the finest Teen Titans being among DC Comics’ most beloved characters. These ten Teen Titans stand atop the hierarchy, battling villains and forming a unique family of characters unlike any other.
10) Tim Drake
Tim Drake initially became a member of Young Justice and took part in the conflict against the robot replica of Superman that led to Donna Troy’s demise in the movie “Titans/Young Justice: Graduation Day”. Following this event, he joined the new iteration of the Teen Titans alongside veteran members Starfire, Raven, Cyborg, Beast Boy, along with Impulse, Superboy, and Cassie Sandsmark. As a Robin, Drake played a significant role in the Teen Titans and continued this tradition by assuming leadership and guiding his teammates through confrontations against adversaries like Deathstroke, Jericho, the Titans of Tomorrow, Doctor Light, Brainiac, Indigo, Lex Luthor, and many others. Having previously worked as Batman’s sidekick and partner, Drake adapted seamlessly to team life. Despite being a part of the New 52 Teen Titans, which had its share of difficulties, his early years as a Titan were exceptional and should not be overshadowed by that period.
9) Superboy
In his initial stint with the Teen Titans, Superboy was manipulated by Lex Luthor and fought against the Titans and Outsiders alongside Indigo (a character complex in nature), but this intriguing tale is not something we’ll hold against him. Later, Superboy joined the Teen Titans alongside the core members of Young Justice, marking the first time a Superboy was part of the team. His tenure with the Teen Titans, culminating in his death during Infinite Crisis, was arguably his best. His blossoming relationship with Cassie was captivating, and watching him work alongside his emotional husband Tim was always enjoyable. Superboy brought immense power to the Teen Titans and developed as a character. I highly recommend revisiting Geoff Johns’ run on this series; it showcases early 2000s Johns at his finest, and the affection for Superboy shines through every page. Much like Tim Drake, we choose to overlook his New 52 Teen Titans stint due to the illogical nature of that version of Superboy.
8) Ravager
Rose Wilson found herself embroiled in her father’s feud against the Teen Titans. He deceived her into harboring hostility towards them and went as far as to mutilate her own eye to resemble him more closely. She joined forces with him in his battles against the Teen Titans, but following the conclusion of Infinite Crisis and the commencement of “One Year Later,” when DC books resumed a year after the event storyline, Ravager became a member of the Teen Titans. She was brash and aggressive, yet she eventually mellowed, proving to be an exceptional member of the team. In many ways, she mirrored the character Terra, leaving fans speculating when she would turn on the group for her father. However, she remained loyal and developed into a remarkable Titan. The relationship between the Teen Titans and characters known as Ravager has been complex, but Rose managed to rise above all that and became one of the coolest new members of the Teen Titans in years.
7) Beast Boy
Garfield Logan, also known as Beast Boy, developed a unique condition after receiving a blood transfusion from a green monkey, granting him the ability to transform into various animals. He was taken in by Steve Dayton, a member of the Doom Patrol, and Elasti-Girl, eventually joining the New Teen Titans and becoming one of the most remarkable members ever.
It’s important to note that some jokes about Beast Boy from the “New Teen Titans” comics may seem outdated or misogynistic due to their original context. His portrayal as a womanizer was intentional, but it’s crucial to remember these depictions reflect the time in which they were created.
Despite this, Beast Boy is an exceptional character, exhibiting numerous facets such as humor, vulnerability, flirtatiousness, loyalty, youthfulness, and romantic potential — qualities that make him stand out even more when considering his heroic actions. He has the potential to be a valuable member of any superteam.
Beast Boy chose to stay with the Titans because they made him feel like an ordinary kid amidst all the extraordinary circumstances. Reading “Tales of the Teen Titans” #50, which showcases Donna Troy and Terry Long’s wedding, offers a unique perspective on Beast Boy that you might not have known before; it’s truly remarkable.
6) Starfire
Originally hailing from a planet that was overtaken, Starfire sought aid from the most powerful cosmic heroes. Despite the potential for anger and resentment towards Earth, she discovered camaraderie and a sense of belonging with the New Teen Titans, joining forces with her newfound family in battle. Known for her sunny disposition and immense combat prowess, Starfire is an unstoppable force when it comes to fighting. Her relationship with Nightwing during the ’80s was iconic, and her appearances in the ’00s Teen Titans and Teen Titans GO! cartoons have made her one of the most cherished superheroes of all time. By any measure, Starfire is a true great — she even manages to best Donna Troy, who was trained by Wonder Woman, in sparring matches. With her intelligence, charm, compassion, and strength, Starfire ranks among the greatest Titans ever.
5) Raven
Raven stands out as the most potent member among the Teen Titans, not just due to her power, but also because she’s an exceptionally captivating character. Being Trigon’s daughter, she has been entangled in numerous battles against her inner darkness, but this is only a fraction of what she’s capable of. The Teen Titans have had the privilege of watching her evolve from someone who was always battling her emotions to someone who loves unreservedly. Her journey as a character has been remarkable, and she has consistently sported some of the most iconic costumes in the annals of the Teen Titans. Raven is a beloved figure on the cosplay scene, and her popularity skyrocketed due to the Teen Titans animated series. She’s even been the lead in several YA comic books that fans adore. In essence, Raven is the genuine article.
4) Cyborg
Through various storylines, the character known as Cyborg has evolved with diverse beginnings. Essentially, a scientist father equips his son with technology to restore his physical form, whether it’s through cybernetics or a Mother Box. Readers have had the pleasure of watching Cyborg mature, triumphing over societal prejudices and personal losses to transform into an exceptional hero. The upgrade provided by his Mother Box boosted his abilities significantly, making him more potent than ever before. For nearly a decade, he served alongside the Justice League, helping establish the New 52 iteration of the team.
Cyborg has gained immense popularity and is recognized as one of the best ‘tanks’ in comic books. His friendship with Beast Boy is one of the most entertaining in comics, and his fame extends beyond the pages of comics due to impressive portrayals in various media. Cyborg’s collection of stories offers a rich diversity that sets him apart among the Teen Titans. It’s hoped that DC will soon provide an opportunity for Cyborg to shine as the solo protagonist he truly deserves to be.
3) Donna Troy
Donna Troy, a character in comics, is known for her intricate backstory and complexity. Initially introduced as a reinterpretation or retcon of Wonder Girl, she was actually Diana in teenage form like Superboy. However, the complexities of DC’s narrative continuity have often put Donna through trials. Ignoring her extraordinary origin, we are left with an admirable heroine who rose to leadership within the Titans.
Donna Troy has always been one of the stronger members of the team, but it’s not her physical power that makes her stand out. Instead, it’s her compassionate and supportive nature that truly defines her. She is a pillar of love and strength for everyone on the team. While the relationship with Terry Long may have been uncomfortable, it doesn’t diminish Donna’s significance.
Donna Troy is an emblematic figure in comics, often compared to Jean Grey due to her multiple resurrections and convoluted narratives (the connection between Jean and the Phoenix, or who was responsible for the D’Bari’s destruction are examples of such complexities). She has been a guiding light for the Teen Titans, and their team would be significantly weaker without her.
2) Nightwing
Dick Grayson initially established and guided the Teen Titans for numerous years. The Teen Titans served as a hub where he could interact with peers his age, and it was there that he flourished, developing into an exceptional leader and hero. He relinquished the Robin identity to become Nightwing alongside the New Teen Titans, thus carving his unique path and ascending to one of DC Comics’ most illustrious figures. Nightwing has even taken on roles previously held by Batman, and currently ranks among the top tier of DC heroes, just below the Trinity.
Nightwing is an ideal Titan, a hero who would go to great lengths for his comrades, often rescuing them from perilous situations that would prove fatal for other superheroes. Nightwing has earned legendary status, yet he might never have achieved such renown without the Teen Titans. Conversely, the Teen Titans may not have attained legendary status without Nightwing’s leadership and guidance.
1.)Wally West/Kid Flash/Flash III
Wally West, also known as Kid Flash, was one of the original members and ultimately the most accomplished Teen Titan. He played a pivotal role in both the Teen Titans and New Teen Titans teams, joining forces with his friends to save the day. Over time, his powers began to diminish, causing him to step away from the group for retirement. However, during the “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” he emerged from retirement to aid in saving the Multiverse. Wally was the first sidekick to assume his mentor’s role and eventually became the finest Flash of them all. His time with Teen Titans played a crucial part in his growth into a hero, making him their most significant success story, and it was this experience that ultimately led to his graduation.
