As a seasoned gaming enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the year 2024 has truly been a visual feast for us gamers! The games released this year have pushed the boundaries of what’s possible on our screens, and it’s been an absolute joy to witness.
2024 saw an array of visually impressive video games emerge, ranging from highly anticipated AAA masterpieces that left us awestruck due to their graphical innovations to unexpected indie gems that demonstrated that quality graphics can be achieved without massive budgets and large development teams. As the year draws to a close, we’ll be discussing 20 such games that made an impact with their stunning visuals from this very year.
#20. F1 24
Year after year, we frequently list the F1 games among those with exceptional graphics due to their exceptional quality in this area. This consistency is because the series excels in graphic design. Just like its predecessors, F1 24 boasts stunning visuals featuring meticulously detailed vehicle models, realistic lighting and weather effects that breathe life into the courses, and more. What sets this series apart is its ability to create a realistic and comprehensive representation of the actual sport, and the graphics and presentation contribute significantly to this authenticity.
#19. BODYCAM
In its present form during early access, Bodycam has several issues we’re eager for it to resolve, but one aspect where the game truly excels is its visual appeal. Given its title, you play from a first-person viewpoint as if wearing a bodycam on your character, and this perspective is complemented by an incredibly realistic graphic style that creates a very impactful effect. At times, the game appears remarkably beautiful, and we’re intrigued to witness how it will evolve towards its final release.
#18. EMPIRE OF THE ANTS
In a surprising turn of events, a humble game called “Empire of the Ants” has captured attention with its stunning graphics. Despite having a modest budget, this game boasts an exceptional photorealistic style that immerses players in a lush, vibrant jungle. Every detail, from each blade of grass to every rock and creature, looks remarkably lifelike, creating a breathtaking visual experience. Although there are some imperfections, the overall effect is nothing less than impressive.
#17. GRAY ZONE WARFARE
As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that the indie powerhouse Madfinger Games unveiled their multiplayer open-world FPS titled “Gray Zone Warfare” this year in early access. While there’s a heap of constructive criticism from the gaming community for the developers to tackle, it’s safe to say that the game’s visuals have been universally praised.
#16. DRAGON BALL: SPARKING! ZERO
This year, Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO rekindled the Budokai Tenkaichi series with a spectacular comeback, and while there are numerous aspects of the game that deserve recognition, its striking graphics stand out. Given the series, it’s no surprise that Sparking! ZERO places emphasis on an artistic style rather than photorealism. Nevertheless, the visual impact it delivers is undeniably captivating. The game looks exceptional in motion, and the awe-inspiring, map-shattering battles between massive characters unleashing their full might never fails to impress.
#15. LIKE A DRAGON: INFINITE WEALTH
The Like a Dragon series has consistently found a balance between high-budget photorealism and mid-budget stylization, and Infinite Wealth continues this trend, delivering another Dragon Engine game that’s hard to look away from. Considering the scale of the game, it’s understandable that not everything looks amazing, but there are plenty of things to do, and what’s presented looks at least acceptable quality. In essence, Infinite Wealth beautifully portrays its vibrant Hawaii setting, easily making it one of the year’s most visually appealing games.
#14. STELLAR BLADE
Stellar Blade, despite being developed by an unestablished studio with minimal AAA console background, left many astonished for various reasons. Its exceptional quality and stunning visuals were unexpected surprises, particularly in a PlayStation 5 exclusive game. The dilapidated post-apocalyptic settings, the intricately designed monsters, and Eve’s fluid combat animations all appear immaculate, showcasing some of the best graphics we’ve seen in a PS5 exclusive title, especially on a PS5 Pro.
#13. DRAGON AGE: THE VEILGUARD
Regarding the graphics of “Dragon Age: The Veilguard,” opinions were split, as some found the shift towards a more stylized art style displeasing. However, we belong to the group that appreciates its overall appearance. The game is visually stunning in multiple aspects, boasting an array of breathtaking environments and lighting effects that are among the best this year has seen in gaming.
#12. STAR WARS OUTLAWS
Describing Star Wars Outlaws as simply “uneven” would be a significant understatement, but when the game performs at its peak, it’s truly exceptional – particularly in terms of graphics, where it undeniably shines. Admittedly, there are visual glitches and technical issues that crop up from time to time, but these imperfections seldom detract from the game’s frequent awe-inspiring appearance. Immersed in its expansive multiplanetary environment, Outlaws consistently leaves you awestruck with its breathtaking visuals and immersive audio. Given that it hails from the studio responsible for The Division, this level of graphical prowess is hardly unexpected.
#11. DRAGON’S DOGMA 2
Capcom consistently delivers a continuous flow of high-quality AAA games that are visually stunning. In the year 2024, their flagship title was Dragon’s Dogma 2. Although it may not rival the visual quality of top-tier Resident Evil games, it is undeniably very good-looking. From the intricately detailed landscapes of its expansive open world, to the remarkably lifelike and diverse array of monsters and creatures you encounter, to the ominous and awe-inspiring atmosphere the game creates, there are numerous aspects of Dragon’s Dogma 2 that demonstrate its impressive visual appeal.
#10. INDIANA JONES AND THE GREAT CIRCLE
MachineGames has been quiet on the major AAA release front for some time, but their return to the limelight at the end of the year with “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” was visually spectacular in numerous ways. The game meticulously recreates its historical setting, offers players a rich and diverse array of stunningly detailed locations to explore, and effortlessly captures the classic Indiana Jones look and feel. It truly excels in this aspect.
#9. SUICIDE SQUAD: KILL THE JUSTICE LEAGUE
The game “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League” was undeniably problematic, without a shadow of a doubt. However, even the most flawed games often possess some commendable aspects, and “Suicide Squad” was no exception. One of its strongest points lay in its visual appeal, an area where Rocksteady Studios has consistently excelled in their previous works. Despite the game’s numerous debilitating issues that make it a chore to play under ideal conditions, visually, there’s much to admire, particularly if you’re focusing on the game’s stunning cinematics.
#8. TEKKEN 8
As a passionate gamer, I can’t help but sing praises for Tekken 8, a fighting game that truly pushes the boundaries of visual splendor. Set to debut this year as one of the most visually stunning Unreal Engine 5 games on the current generation, Bandai Namco’s legendary fighter has been building anticipation with its jaw-dropping previews. And let me tell you, it doesn’t disappoint! From the intricately designed stages to the meticulously crafted character models, and the breathtaking special effects that light up the screen, Tekken 8 is a visual masterpiece that demands your admiration at every turn.
#7. WARHAMMER 40,000: SPACE MARINE 2
As a gaming enthusiast, let me tell you that Space Marine 2 has left me spellbound! Its visual appeal is unparalleled, boasting intricately detailed environments, lifelike characters, and fearsome enemy designs that make every battle feel epic. But what truly sets it apart are the moments when I find myself engulfed by colossal waves of enemies, where hundreds upon hundreds of adversaries charge at me simultaneously. The game manages to pull this off seamlessly, without a hint of performance lag, which only adds to its awe-inspiring charm. Truly, it’s nothing short of a marvel!
#6. BLACK MYTH: WUKONG
For approximately four years before its release, what consistently caught our attention about “Black Myth: Wukong” was its exceptional visual appeal. This observation was even more notable because the game originated from a less recognized Chinese studio with no established AAA pedigree. When it debuted in August, thankfully, “Black Myth” lived up to its promise of beauty. It showcased diverse settings, impressively designed bosses, and some of the most striking landscapes we’ve seen in games this year, all contributing to a visually stunning experience that is undoubtedly one of the most attractive games of this generation (despite the occasional technical imperfection).
#5. FINAL FANTASY 7 REBIRTH
There’s no shortage of amazing aspects about “Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth,” and its visual grandeur is definitely one of them. While the game does experience some graphical inconsistencies when played in Performance Mode, even at its worst, it still manages to look impressive. At its best, it’s simply breathtaking. The game’s expansive world is filled with stunning sights that are worth exploring, and on a PS5 Pro, it looks absolutely magnificent with minimal drawbacks.
#4. SILENT HILL 2
The remake of Silent Hill 2 raised some doubts among many, considering Bloober Team’s previous inconsistent performance. However, it was reasonable to be skeptical, especially regarding the graphics. But one aspect where everyone agreed it wouldn’t disappoint was its visuals. Indeed, graphics have always been a strong suit for Bloober games, and Silent Hill 2 certainly doesn’t fall short in this regard. The decaying titular town and its hidden horrors are breathtakingly depicted, instilling terror in players. Furthermore, the characters from Silent Hill 2, familiar to many, have been given a fresh lease of life with the game’s improved fidelity. And yes, the fog looks stunning.
#3. MICROSOFT FLIGHT SIMULATOR 2024
2020 saw Microsoft Flight Simulator leaving us all in awe, and it continues to stand as one of the most visually stunning games across all platforms. Unsurprisingly, the 2024 version managed to surpass even these high standards with its breathtaking visuals. Admittedly, slight improvements are starting to become apparent, but at the end of the day, even the most hardened skeptic is left speechless by the incredible detail, authenticity, and photorealism that Flight Sim 2024 brings to its ambitious vision.
#2. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: HEART OF CHORNOBYL
Similar to its predecessors, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 has a few rough spots, and with its technical glitches and deliberately challenging style, it’s certainly not for everyone. However, let me tell you, it’s visually stunning! GSC Game World’s open-world shooter is one of the most beautiful games to be released this generation. It offers an astonishing level of detail and realism across a vast world with remarkable consistency. The game truly earns all the accolades for the effort it puts into creating an authentic world, and for drawing players into its lethal environment.
#1. SENUA’S SAGA: HELLBLADE 2
While some may find Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 not as impressive as its predecessor in various aspects, there is no denying that it excels significantly in the graphics department. As a studio known for pushing technological boundaries, Ninja Theory has truly pulled out all the stops with Microsoft’s financial backing. From its gritty environment to the remarkably realistic character models and their expressions, the game boasts impressive lighting effects, a dense atmosphere, and animations so good that they make even gameplay moments look like beautifully crafted cinematics. Throughout every moment of play, Hellblade 2 continues to be visually captivating.
