Post-apocalyptic films offer some of the most gripping and inventive narratives, with the past few decades producing numerous high-quality productions. Typically set in worlds devastated by human self-destruction, post-apocalyptic movies often delve into action, psychological suspense, or horror genres while staying true to their post-society concept. Although they are set in the future, these films often explore pertinent themes and convey insightful political ideas. From the acclaimed Mad Max series to standalone masterpieces, the cinematic world of post-apocalyptic movies brims with captivating stories.
As a follower of the genre, I’m currently immersed in season 2 of The Last of Us on Max, and if you’re also a fan of the TV show, I highly recommend checking out films that share a similar theme. Here are five recent post-apocalyptic movies that tell some of the best survival stories:
1. Mad Max: Fury Road
2. A Quiet Place
3. The Road
4. Snowpiercer
5. I Am Legend
Mad Max: Fury Road
In George Miller’s fourth Mad Max movie, titled “Mad Max: Fury Road” (released in 2015), we witness a fresh start for the series with its new characters and revamped post-apocalyptic setting. The film introduces Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky, a resilient survivor in the wasteland, who gets captured by the wicked Immortan Joe (portrayed by Hugh Keays-Byrne). As the story unfolds, Max joins forces with Imperator Furiosa (played by Charlize Theron) and other allies to embark on a pulse-pounding journey across the desert, aiming to overthrow the malevolent warlord.
The film “Mad Max: Fury Road” offers captivating visuals, thrilling action scenes, and powerful character performances at every turn. This movie more effectively conveys the harshness of the post-apocalyptic desert backdrop of the Mad Max universe than any of its previous installments and serves as a solid foundation for the upcoming prequel in 2024 titled “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga“. To this day, “Mad Max: Fury Road” stands among the top action movies set within a post-apocalyptic world.
It Comes at Night
2017’s movie It Comes at Night has a standalone storyline that manages to keep viewers tense due to its high levels of suspense. The film was written and directed by Trey Edward Shults, focusing on married couple Paul (Joel Edgerton) and Sarah (Carmen Ejogo), their son Travis (Kelvin Harrison Jr.), and their dog Stanley, who live secluded in the woods during a deadly pandemic. They seldom interact with others until a man named Will (Christopher Abbott) attempts to break into their home while scavenging for supplies for himself, his wife Kim (Riley Keough), and their young son Andrew (Griffin Robert Faulkner). Despite initially helping each other, distrust and peculiar occurrences gradually lead to turmoil.
It Comes at Night” goes beyond being just a standard post-apocalyptic horror film; it explores deep themes about trust, morality, and survival in a world without rules where only staying alive matters. The acting across the board is exceptional, while Shults’s script maintains a steady pace, ensuring no information overload at any given moment. The climactic ending of “It Comes at Night” packs a punch, leaving audiences with much to contemplate.
10 Cloverfield Lane
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I can’t forget the gripping portrayal of apocalypse survival and monster horror in “10 Cloverfield Lane” from 2016. In this film, I found myself drawn into the story of Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a woman who wakes up in an underground shelter with two other individuals. The man running the shelter, Howard (played by John Goodman), claims that the outside air is toxic, but as time goes on, both Michelle and Emmett (John Gallagher Jr.) start to suspect that his intentions might not be as pure as he claims.
In a first-person perspective, I’d say: “Experiencing 10 Cloverfield Lane is like being drawn into a gripping and enigmatic narrative that mirrors our deepest human fears and suspicions when faced with adversity. Unlike its action-packed predecessor, Cloverfield from 2008, this film takes a more intimate approach, setting it apart in the genre. Although the movie’s big reveal at the end is quite shocking, the tension that precedes it makes for an exceptional storytelling experience.
Snowpiercer
The 2013 movie ‘Snowpiercer’, which is an adaptation from Jacques Lob’s French graphic novel, paints a captivating picture of a post-apocalyptic world set in a future where the earth has been plunged into an ice age due to a climate catastrophe. Humanity’s survivors now live on a perpetually moving train circumnavigating the globe. Bong Joon Ho, in his English-language film debut, masterfully brings this intriguing concept to life. The story unfolds as lower-class passengers led by Curtis Everett (played by Chris Evans) plan and execute a rebellion against the privileged upper class residing at the front of the train.
In a captivating blend of pulse-pounding action and intriguingly developed characters, Snowpiercer offers a chilling depiction of what our world might become if climate change goes unchecked. The film’s visuals are breathtakingly stunning, adding to its suspense, while Bong Joon-ho skillfully constructs an engaging universe. To this day, the 2013 movie remains the standout adaptation of Snowpiercer, as it has since been transformed into a TV series with the same name.
28 Days Later
Twenty-eight years after its release, “28 Days Later” remains one of the top zombie films in contemporary cinema. Directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, this 2002 film tells the story of Jim (played by Cillian Murphy), who awakens from a coma to find himself in a world devastated by a deadly rage virus. The harrowing portrayal of post-apocalyptic life and the zombie-like creatures populating the Earth makes for an intense viewing experience. Notably, Murphy delivers a stellar performance, with Naomie Harris, Brendan Gleeson, and the rest of the cast also contributing to the film’s success. “28 Days Later” is a masterfully crafted survival horror movie that combines elements of gore, suspense, and political messaging, making it a must-watch for any film enthusiast. A third installment titled “28 Years Later” is scheduled for release in theaters this coming June, following the 2007 sequel “28 Weeks Later”.
