Top Gun 3 Gets Exciting New Update from Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise recently shared some news about the upcoming film “Top Gun 3” during his promotional tour for his latest action blockbuster, “Mission: Impossible – Fallout.” Among many projects under his belt, Mission: Impossible and Top Gun are undeniably the most prominent. Interestingly, it took 35 years for a sequel to Top Gun to materialize, during which Tom Cruise made six Mission: Impossible films and had two more approved. Although “Top Gun: Maverick” is his largest production to date, there were questions about whether “Top Gun 3” would ever come to fruition given Tom Cruise’s cautious approach to projects and, importantly, the actor approaching the age of 63.

2024 saw rumors circulating about Paramount’s progress on Top Gun 3, yet no specifics regarding the film have been disclosed or unveiled since then. Some pondered if these reports might merely serve as a publicity stunt for Paramount, considering Tom Cruise’s alleged strained relationship with them following the near-streaming release of Top Gun: Maverick during the pandemic and his establishment of an office at Warner Bros. instead.

Top Gun 3 Is in the Works, Confirms Tom Cruise

Apart from that, nearly every actor featured in “Top Gun: Maverick,” including Glen Powell and Miles Teller, have been tight-lipped regarding potential plans for “Top Gun 3.” As of now, it appears they aren’t tied down to anything, but are eagerly awaiting the go-ahead from Tom Cruise. They seem equally invested in the project as Paramount Pictures, fortunately, someone managed to quiz Tom Cruise about the future of this series.

In an interview on Today (Australian show), Tom Cruise was queried if a third installment of the popular series Top Gun was imminent. To everyone’s surprise, he openly confirmed that the project is underway and they are also discussing potential plans for another movie in the Days of Thunder franchise.

Absolutely, I’ve been pondering and discussing a myriad of stories, exploring possibilities and potential directions. You see, it took me three long decades to bring ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ to life, so naturally, we’re delving into ‘Days of Thunder’ and revisiting ‘Top Gun: Maverick’. There are numerous other films that we’re actively developing right now. I’m either shooting a film, preparing for one, or wrapping up another. I’ve recently completed a film with Alejandro Iñárritu, who is renowned for ‘The Revenant’, and collaborating with Christopher McQuarrie on several projects simultaneously.

The upcoming film “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” is being marketed as the last Mission movie for Tom Cruise, although he hasn’t confirmed this yet. It’s possible he might return in future installments, given the positive reception of the latest Mission: Impossible film, which is, however, the lowest-rated in the series for many years. The movie has received mixed reviews from critics who find it overly complex and packed with too much plot. Tom Cruise may want to end his run with a powerful finale that justifies this swan song, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Should Tom Cruise choose to pause the series, it could potentially pave the way for more Top Gun films in the future. The plotline for a third movie remains uncertain, along with the possibility of director Joseph Kosinski returning. Regardless, there appears to be strong interest among fans for Top Gun 3, and Tom Cruise hasn’t ruled out the possibility of reprising his role. However, whether or not another film will materialize in the near future is yet to be determined.
