Agatha Christie’s novel, “Towards Zero,” delves into the consequences arising from a high-profile divorce scandal that rocked England during the year 1936.
The synopsis states that British tennis player Nevile Strange and his former spouse, Audrey, choose the unexpected move of reuniting for a summer at Gull’s Point, a place close to their hearts – it being the childhood home and coastal property owned by Nevile’s aunt, Lady Tressilian.
Amidst lingering issues from their past as childhood sweethearts and the addition of Neville’s current spouse, Kay, the atmosphere is filled with palpable tension.
Include a devoted servant of a patient woman, a secretive butler to a enigmatic nobleman, a disgruntled relative banished from the family, an esteemed legal advisor from the family, a curious street urchin, and a cunning French imposter, and you’ll soon have a tragic event involving death.
As I delve deeper into this case, I feel compelled to unravel the intricate knot of envy, falsehoods, and broken relationships that entangle our beleaguered investigator.
“Can he solve the crime before another victim meets their death?” asks the logline.

Anjelica Huston as Lady Tressilian

Who is Lady Tressilian? She is often referred to as the matriarch of a rather chaotic, unruly family, according to Huston. This woman is tasked with attempting to bring order to the group – or so she believes is her role.
She possesses a unique ability to persuade others into following her desires – steering and managing things according to her vision, much like captaining a vessel.
She manages everything efficiently from her perch, or bedroom, displaying a commendable approach. Frankly, I found myself spending most days on the set, lazing in bed! This was quite the switch from my typical routine.
Apart from the roles you mentioned (The Witches, The Addams Family, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, and The Grifters), Anjelica Huston is also recognized for performances in television series like Smash, The Mists of Avalon, and EverAfter.
Oliver Jackson-Cohen as Nevile Strange

What about this person named Nevile Strange? He’s a well-known tennis player currently going through a high-profile divorce due to infidelity. Interestingly, Lady Tressilian happens to be his aunt.
Jackson-Cohen stated that he was “very much like the David Beckham of his era.” The pair, consisting of him and his wife, Audrey, are a renowned celebrity duo, frequently featured in newspapers, and adored by many.
As a film enthusiast, I’d put it this way: “I’d say he’s the charismatic jock adored by the masses on the field, yet his domestic life is a tangled web of complex emotions that he carries with quiet intensity.
Regarding Nevile’s connection with Audrey, he expressed: “They both have an overwhelming drive to succeed in everything they do. I believe this stems from their shared upbringing. It’s somewhat reminiscent of Burton and Taylor’s dynamic. It’s a continuous examination of codependence and the ugliness and danger it can lead to. They find such pleasure in engaging in this game, regardless of the price they pay, they just can’t seem to step away from it.
Has Oliver Jackson-Cohen appeared in any other productions aside from The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor? His resume also features Surface, Wilderness, The Invisible Man, Dracula, and Lark Rise to Candleford.
Ella Lily Hyland as Audrey Strange

In the first episode, we learn that Audrey Strange is the niece of Lady Tressilian and was previously married to the well-known sports star, Nevile.
According to Hyland, Audrey relocated to Gull’s Point during her childhood years as she was an orphan. From their very early days, Audrey and Nevile had a bond reminiscent of siblings; however, their connection evolved into something more romantic over time.
In the story, we encounter Audrey who has chosen to end her marriage with Neville. It’s clear that she is a victim of a harmful union, as their relationship was marked by poisonous, convoluted, and draining dynamics. However, it seems she is seeking liberation from this toxic bond.
According to Hyland, there’s a significant dynamic among Audrey, Nevile, and Kay. The key point is that both Neville and Audrey dislike boredom intensely. Currently, Nevile is involved with Kay, but he seems to feel compelled to maintain this intricate game with Audrey in an odd and convoluted manner, expressing it indirectly.
I strongly believe that Audrey harbors some attraction towards Kay, possibly due to her involvement with Nevile. This kind of forbidden affection might develop within such a relationship dynamic.
What else has Ella Lily Hyland been in? You might know her from Black Doves and Fifteen-Love.
Mimi Keene as Kay Elliot

Who is Kay Elliot? Nevile’s new wife.
According to Keene, Kay appears less worldly than she actually is. Her resilience, born from life experiences, is truly remarkable. Time and again, she faces challenges head-on without faltering. In contrast, I believe I might crack under pressure when Kay remains steadfast.
Regarding the love triangle, Keene expressed his belief that the bond between Nevile and Audrey may not stay as intense in Kay’s expectations.
Neville explains that he wants Kay to join them on their honeymoon, even though his ex-wife is along, by pointing out that the location holds deep personal significance for him and Audrey since they both grew up there. This is Neville’s tactic for persuading Kay to agree to stay at this house.
What else has Mimi Keene been in? She’s best known for EastEnders ands Sex Education.
Anjana Vasan as Mary Aldin

Who is Mary Aldin? She’s employed as Lady Tressilian’s companion.
As I watched the film unfold, it was evident that the protagonist was grappling with a deep sense of disappointment and missed opportunities – as if life had subtly slipped away from her grasp. By the time we delve deeper into the narrative, this character harbors a simmering anger, which gradually intensifies, particularly towards Lady Tressilian. Despite their prior camaraderie, there’s an undeniable undercurrent of tension between them.
As a film enthusiast, I must admit that there’s an intriguing sense of anticipation lingering in the air. It’s as if Mary, our protagonist, stands at a crossroads, with two distinct paths unfolding before her at the outset of this captivating tale.
Has Anjana Vasan appeared in any other productions aside from We Are Lady Parts, Wicked Little Letters, Black Mirror, Killing Eve, and Mogul Mowgli?
Clarke Peters as Mr Treves

Who is Mr Treves? The Tressilian/Strange lawyer.
According to Peters, he’s privy to the family’s secrets, he knows where they stash their wealth, and he understands everyone’s desires because he serves as Lady Tressilian’s trusted advisor.
If called to testify, it’s likely he could expose secrets that could potentially devastate his family, as they are secrets Lady Tressilian prefers to keep hidden.
Has Clarke Peters appeared in any other productions besides those listed: The Wire, Da 5 Bloods, Treme, I Wanna Dance with Somebody, The Man Who Fell to Earth, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Harriet, and Jericho?
Jack Farthing as Thomas Royde

Who is Thomas Royde? Nevile and Audrey’s cousin.
In 1936, Malaya found Farthing managing a rubber plantation, but it was clear he wasn’t cut out for such a role. He lacked the necessary skills for management and was quickly running low on funds… Desperate for a reason to return home and receive financial assistance, he was eagerly seeking an excuse.
It appears to me that he’s been stuck in a phase of immaturity, as he hasn’t progressed beyond a particular point in his childhood when something significant and distressing occurred. At age twelve, Thomas experienced a traumatic event which he tried to address honestly, but his family managed to suppress his voice on the matter.
“They want to cover it up, so he lives with that still now as a 30-year-old man.”
Beyond Poldark, have you caught Jack Farthing in any other films or shows? I recall seeing him in Rain Dogs, Chloe, Spencer, and The Serial Killer’s Wife as well.
Matthew Rhys as Inspector Leach

Rhys described him as an intriguing individual, deep and empathetic in nature. His experiences during the First World War have led him to become so detached that he exists mostly on the outskirts and fringes of most social groups.
Looking around provides him significant benefits as a detective, allowing him to see and understand the situations unfolding.
As a film enthusiast, I’ve always admired Matthew Rhys’ work, and when someone asks me “What other productions has Matthew Rhys been involved in?”, I can confidently say he’s starred in Perry Mason, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, The Americans, Brothers & Sisters, and The Edge of Love.
Adam Hugill as Mac

Who exactly is this character, Mac, as described by Hugill? He manages to infiltrate Nevile’s life, taking up the role of a personal valet in an intriguing manner. There’s an air of mystery and enigma surrounding him, and it seems that this is intentional for the audience to appreciate.
Mac carries some baggage from his past and, similar to other characters created by Agatha Christie, he harbors a hidden truth that is gradually revealed throughout the narrative. He’s a reserved, taciturn individual who speaks sparingly, yet he exhibits a methodical, calculating demeanor.
What else has Adam Hugill been in? You might have watched him in Sherwood and The Watch.
Khalil Gharbia plays Louis Morel

The person you’re referring to as Louis Morel is a dashing individual who strikes up a conversation with Inspector Leach at the hotel bar in the initial episode.
According to Gharbia, Louis has a charming yet womanizing personality, often referred to as a “lounge lizard”. What intrigues her about him is his ability to take her to a captivatingly sensual world, which adds a unique charm to the narrative.
Has Khalil Gharbia appeared in any other productions, aside from Skam France, The 7 Lives of Lea, and The Lost Boys Peter von Kant?
Grace Doherty plays Sylvia
Who is Sylvia? Mr Treves’s ward. She forms a bond with Leach.
Rhys mentioned, “There’s a special connection between him… Sylvia that ignites something within him.” He also noted that Sylvia and Leach are very much alike, sharing an incredible bond of kinship. They both seem to be isolated in the world, experiencing a profound sense of detachment. What they find in each other is instantaneously recognizable – a shared loneliness.
Leach is taken aback, as she’s not typically the type. However, they aid each other in rediscovering empathy or faith in human nature.
What else has Grace Doherty been in? You might know her from Casualty.

- Jackie Clune (Motherland) as Mrs Barrett – Lady Tressilian’s housekeeper.
