Tracy Morgan Thanks God for Surviving Near-Fatal Accident to Celebrate SNL 50

Tracy Morgan is grateful to be able to celebrate.

Over a decade following a severe car accident that affected him, the former Saturday Night Live star shared how significant it is to be among his comedy kin as they mark the special occasion of the legendary sketch series with SNL: The Anniversary Special. (Check out all the stars on the red carpet.)

He expressed his gratitude towards God, saying, “I’m so thankful to be a part of this,” after walking the red carpet on February 16 at 30 Rockefeller Center. He was grateful for surviving an accident and being alive to attend this event.

In June 2014, Tina Fey’s co-star from “30 Rock” experienced a severe brain injury and multiple bone fractures in a six-car crash involving a Walmart truck colliding with the limousine Tracy was traveling in, in New Jersey. This accident, which claimed the life of Tracy’s friend, James McNair, kept him hospitalized for several weeks and necessitated a long recovery period.

Tracy, who starred on Saturday Night Live from 1996 to 2003, was noticeably absent at the special marking its 40th anniversary, which took place more than six months later. In her and Alec Baldwin’s 30 Rock co-star’s absence, Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin paid a touching tribute to Tracy during the broadcast.

Tina mentioned during the February 2015 special that she wished her friend, Tracy Morgan, could be here tonight. I believe he also hoped he’d feel well enough to join us as well.

She commented, “If he were present right now, I believe Tracy would want to emphasize that above all else, he’d love for us all to become parents.

Before playing a clip of his famous character Brian Fellows, Alec and Tina expressed their fondness for their coworker Tracy and mentioned they’d meet him at the 41st reunion. Unfortunately, that reunion didn’t happen, but Tracy was expected to attend the next significant event instead.

As he looked back on his time at the show, he shared that his most cherished moment with SNL creator Lorne Michaels was when Lorne chose him to become a cast member, a memory he still fondly recalls as the greatest one ever.
