Families in the Dominican Republic are mourning a tremendous loss.
44 individuals lost their lives, and 146 suffered injuries when the roof of the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo caved in during Rubby Pérez’s performance in the wee hours of April 8th. This tragic incident was subsequently confirmed by Dominican authorities.
Juan Manuel Méndez, head of emergency management operations, stated during a news briefing following the event, “We’re continuing our efforts, looking for survivors amidst the debris.” He emphasized, “Given that numerous individuals could still be alive, we won’t cease our search until we locate the final person trapped in that rubble.
In the group who passed away was the saxophonist performing with Perez, as well as Governor Nelsy Cruz. Méndez mentioned that out of the over 300 individuals in the club at the time, 146 needed to be taken to the hospital.
Zulinka Pérez, Perez’s daughter, informed local media that her father is currently in a stable state after the incident, further clarifying to Listin Diario that he began singing amidst the debris to help rescuers locate him by his voice.
Following the unfortunate incident at the club, which took place towards 1 a.m., local time, during a merengue performance, the nightclub extended their sympathies.
The tragic loss of lives has left us deeply saddened and heartbroken,” the statement on Instagram read. “At this challenging time, our thoughts go out to every family impacted. We feel their pain as if it were ours, for we too are grieving. We’re cooperating closely with the relevant authorities to help the victims and uncover the truth of the situation.
During the aftermath of the event, family members such as Nelson Cruz (the baseball player), brother to Cruz, shared their sentiments through a public statement. This statement included details about his late sister’s funeral and expressed thoughts on her lasting impact, which he discussed in his Instagram Stories from April 8th.
He portrayed the politician as an individual who, throughout their life, demonstrated a strong commitment, empathy, and affection towards their constituents and community.
Others, on the other hand, have been eagerly anticipating updates regarding their own family members, such as Massiel Cuevas, the godmother of attendee Darlenys Batista. In an interview with the Associated Press, she expressed her longing for her, stating “I’m waiting for her.” She believes that “She’s in there. I know she’s in there.
