One character featured in the series is Steven Flannigan, a youth who tragically lost his family – his parents and sister – when they were all away from home while he was out completing an errand.
The poignant narrative unfolds across the six episodes, detailing Steven’s heartrending journey to rebuild his life after a catastrophe that left him without family and a home. Unfortunately, Steven’s actual life story extended beyond the series, ending tragically when he passed away at the tender age of 26.
Delve into an in-depth exploration of the authentic lifestyle of Steven Flannigan, as depicted by Archie McCormick in The Bombing of Pan Am Flight 103.
What happened to Steven Flannigan, as seen in The Bombing of Pan Am 103.

14-year-old Steven Flannigan lived in Lockerbie at the time when Pan Am Flight 103 was bombed. On that fateful evening, he had brought his newly received Christmas gift, a bike belonging to his sister, to a neighbor for a tune-up.
Upon his return, remnants from the crashed airplane had landed on his residence, tragically claiming the lives of Tom and Kathleen Flannigan, along with their 10-year-old daughter Joanne. They were among the 270 casualties from that fateful evening’s incident.
He only had one immediate family member left, his 19-year-old sibling named David. At the moment in question, David was residing with a friend in Blackpool for a brief spell.
In the show, it’s depicted that Steven develops a friendship with Detective Sergeant Ed McCusker. However, it remains uncertain if this relationship was genuine, or if he had a deeper bond with another officer, Alex Smith. The narrative of Smith seems to have been blended with that of McCusker in some way.
After the unfortunate incident that left them both struggling, Steven and David received approximately 2.1 million pounds in compensation. Instead of saving or reinvesting it, David hastily squandered his share, labeling the money as “tainted.” On the other hand, Steven chose to invest his portion.
At the age of 24, five years following the Lockerbie bombing in 1993, David passed away due to heart failure. His life was marked by substance abuse and excessive drinking, and he spent his final days in a hostel in Thailand.
A couple of months following the demise of his brother, Steven embarked on a romantic relationship with his foster mother, which eventually came to light, causing him to leave Lockerbie unexpectedly. In an unforeseen move, he decided to learn how to fly jumbo jets in Florida.
In the year 1996, after relocating back to Glasgow with his new acquaintance, John Boyce, he encountered a woman named Lisa Gregory during a trip to Lockerbie. As their bond deepened into love, when she became pregnant, he decided to reside with her in Lockerbie.
Before their son Luke was born in 1997, the relationship between them had fallen apart. Consequently, Steven relocated to Bradford on Avon, living there with Boyce and his spouse.
In the year 1999, Boyce along with his spouse decided to relocate to Heywood and establish a bed-and-breakfast. Subsequently, Steven joined their venture as a business partner and once more resided with them.
In the year 2000, Steven took some guesthouse guests to a local tavern before departing via an unmarked path. It’s not clear under what circumstances this happened, but at some point, he stumbled onto the adjacent railway tracks and was struck by a slow-moving train during the early morning hours.
Despite the train moving very sluggishly, it still took him two additional days in the hospital before he passed away. Regrettably, he never came back to consciousness during that time, and he sadly lost his life at only 26 years old.
In 2018, Luke, his son, turned 21 years old and stood as the lone recipient of Steven’s settlement money, which had been deposited into a trust fund for him. It was reported that he resided on a secluded sheep farm located near Lockerbie.
