Transformers Movies Ruined Optimus Prime’s Noble Character

Although not the most detestable movies globally, the Transformers films have significantly impacted the character of Optimus Prime in a negative way, transforming him from a noble leader into a merciless fighter. This transformation was met with disapproval even by Peter Cullen, the original voice actor for Optimus Prime. To date, there are seven live-action Transformers movies, encompassing five films directed by Michael Bay and two sequel prequels, spanning from 2007 to 2023. Despite earning a massive $5.29 billion at the global box office and ranking as the 14th highest-grossing film series ever, these science fiction action movies have received generally unfavorable to mixed reviews from critics.

After a prolonged battle between the Autobots and Decepticons over Earth, the Transformers movies have consistently been box office hits, renowned for their action scenes. Yet, this isn’t entirely what the franchise is centered on. Peter Cullen, who lends his voice to Optimus Prime in the Transformers films, has openly criticized the film series’ portrayal of his character due to its significant deviation from the original content. Unsurprisingly, many fans of the franchise echo similar sentiments. Despite this critical feedback, the sci-fi franchise continues to thrive, with numerous Transformers movies slated for release in the near future.

Optimus Prime Was Turned Into A Ruthless Warrior By The Transformers Movies

The Movies Changed Optimus Prime’s Morals And Idealistic Views

In the Transformers movies, Optimus Prime was portrayed as a merciless warrior, which was a stark departure from his usual benevolent character. Many who are familiar with the original source material found this transformation to be too extreme. From the start, Optimus Prime has been admired for his nobility and kindness, possessing a strong moral compass that made him somewhat of an idealist. Removing these qualities would be similar to altering Batman’s “no killing” rule or neglecting Spider-Man’s responsibility in using his powers wisely – exactly what transpired in the Transformers films.

In the films, Optimus Prime was depicted as a significantly harsher personality, showing no qualms about harming humans and lashing out in violent fits. However, it’s important to note that Optimus Prime is indeed a warrior, but he typically spares his enemies and allows them an opportunity for redemption. The portrayal of Optimus in these movies deviates from this usual peaceful demeanor, presenting him as a character driven by strong emotions rather than just duty. Altering a character’s moral compass can be effective when executed well, and the version of Optimus we see in these films appears to have undergone significant hardships that led to his transformation.

In contrast, the portrayal of Optimus Prime in the Transformers movies seemed primarily designed to cater to Hollywood’s demand for a sci-fi franchise brimming with action scenes. Rather than exploring a rich character development that revealed how and why Optimus evolved, these films prioritized an action-oriented narrative geared towards attracting a larger audience. Granted, the movie version of Optimus is a charismatic character, exuding wisdom alongside powerful and aggressive moves. However, for many fans, this depiction seemed to stray from the essence of what Optimus Prime stands for.

Even Peter Cullen Wasn’t Happy With Optimus Prime’s Portrayal

The Optimus Prime Voice Actor Had Some Concerns

In every Transformers movie except for the prequel animated film Transformers One, where Chris Hemsworth took over the role, Peter Cullen has lent his voice to Optimus Prime. This long-standing association with the character makes Peter Cullen an authority on Optimus Prime, and therefore, it carries significant weight when he expresses dissatisfaction with how Optimus Prime was depicted in certain Transformers films.

“I really don’t want to read that line. I don’t think he’d say that.”

At a Transformers Q&A session during TFcon Chicago in 2022, Peter Cullen expressed discomfort when asked to read certain lines because they didn’t align with Optimus Prime’s character. He stated that if he was presented with a line that didn’t fit Optimus Prime, he would express his reluctance, saying something like “I don’t feel this is a line Optimus Prime would say.” Interestingly, there was one director who disregarded his concerns, demonstrating the significant impact Cullen has on the character. The full TFcon panel discussion can be found below, with the relevant question starting at the 31-minute mark.

In his discussion at the panel, Cullen didn’t disclose the director who dismissed his reservations about Optimus Prime’s character representation in the movies, but he did quote, “I’ll destroy them all,” in his Optimus voice – a line clearly referencing the Michael Bay films, as Optimus Prime says “We will destroy them all!” in Transformers: Dark of the Moon and “I’ll destroy you!” in Transformers: Age of Extinction. Peter Cullen’s portrayal in the Transformers movies has become legendary, yet it’s unfortunate that Optimus Prime was altered significantly from his typical “tough enough to be gentle” persona, which is characteristic of the Transformers character.
