Transformers One – REVIEW

As a seasoned cinephile who has weathered countless cinematic storms and witnessed the rise and fall of many a silver screen titan, I must say that Transformers One is an exhilarating return to form for this iconic franchise. Having grown up with the original animated series and feeling the heartbreak of Michael Bay’s live-action adaptations, I can confidently say that this animated reboot has managed to strike a perfect balance between nostalgia and innovation.

In a shift from the chaotic live-action Transformers movies by Michael Bay, where cities were obliterated like a boisterous hen party of Essex girls, the franchise is back to its animated beginnings with the debut of Transformers One. This tale takes us right back to the beginning, unfolding an origin story set on planet Cybertron. Here, we find Orion Pax (voiced by Chris Hemsworth) and D-16 (voiced by Brian Tyree Henry), a duo of friends who work as miners. The robot populace in this world is divided into two groups: the workers, who lack the transformation cog, and their bosses, who possess it. This story mirrors the franchise itself, as the workers are destined to mine Energon, an energy source that keeps the bots running, much like how this series needs a significant revival after its recent films have seen a decline in quality.

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’ve been following this sci-fi adventure closely. The crux of the conflict revolves around the lost Matrix of Leadership, a relic that could have spared the inhabitants from their laborious mining predicament. In the writers’ room, they may have pondered various names for it, ultimately settling on the “Cacophony of Cobblers.” However, our heroes are hopeful that its recovery will mark an end to their enslavement. There seems to be a hint of worker uprising against oppressive management in this narrative, which adds depth to the storyline.

Under the leadership of Josh Cooley, who previously directed Toy Story 4, this production is in capable hands. With an abundance of humorous scenes, well-crafted action sequences, some surprising character growth, and enough nods to the Decepticon vs Autobots lore to keep both die-hard fans and newcomers satisfied, Cooley’s animated rendition of the franchise promises a revitalizing…er, transformation.
