As a seasoned wrestling aficionado who’s seen more than his fair share of chair shots and title swaps, I must say that Saturday Night’s Main Event was a rollercoaster ride of emotions. The match between Cody Rhodes and Kevin Owens was a classic display of their long-standing rivalry, with each man pulling out all the stops to secure victory.
The rivalry between Cody Rhodes and Kevin Owens has been fueled by bad blood since Rhodes joined forces with Roman Reigns against Solo Sikoa and The Bloodline. The tension escalated when Owens attacked Randy Orton, their former friend. Tonight’s match at Saturday Night’s Main Event was no exception, with the confrontation requiring two referees. Despite Owens using a chair during the fight, Rhodes managed to dodge the attack. An intriguing twist came when Rhodes used the very same chair that commentator Jesse Ventura had pointed out earlier, which might hint at a potential Rhodes heel turn in the future. The chaos didn’t end there; later, a brawl ensued between Triple H and Owens after Rhodes was taken out of the match. Let’s delve into the details, and you can watch the fight video below.
Initially, Rhodes and Owens exchanged moves during the start of the bout. Later, Rhodes leaped over the ropes and collided Owens with the barricade, but he appeared to injure his ankle upon landing. This injury would pose challenges for Rhodes throughout the match. Despite this, Rhodes managed to get Owens back into the ring, limping slightly as he did so. Afterwards, Owens retaliated by hurling Rhodes into the ring post and subsequently slamming him onto the commentary table before waving at Randy on camera.
Afterward, Owens began chasing after The Champ, yet he paused momentarily to perform some thrilling DX gestures towards the audience. Owens brutally executed a DDT on Rhodes, but Rhodes retaliated, even incorporating some Stardust moves in his counterattack. Owens relentlessly assaulted Rhodes, who then retorted with an homage to Orton by delivering an RKO to Owens. A massive Cody Cutter ensued, yet it failed to fully subdue Owens. Rhodes managed to hoist Owens up high, but then Owens turned the tables and executed a Fisherman’s Buster, aiming for a victory, albeit Rhodes was able to evade defeat by kicking out just in time.

As a moviegoer, I’d rephrase that action scene like this: During our wrestling match, I tried to counter Owens’ move, but instead, he shoved me towards the referee, causing him to tumble down. Owens managed to pin me, but with the referee unconscious on the floor, the crucial three-count was missed. Another referee stepped in just then, and despite my best efforts, he declared the victory for Owens. But luckily, before that could happen, I had somehow mustered the strength to kick out in time.
In this instance, Rhodes ended up being the one to replace the referee after an accidental collision caused one to go down. He executed a Cody Cutter and managed to dodge a chair thrown by Owens. However, he performed a Cross Rhodes directly onto that very chair, removing it just in time for the initial referee to recover. This left Owens pinned, awarding Rhodes another impressive victory and allowing him to extend his Championship reign further.

In other words, is acting like the chair is consistent with being a villain (heel), and it appears that this is indeed the case, given that not only did he use the chair, but he also took care to remove it before the referee noticed. Rhodes accepted the victory without protest, though there’s a possibility he may explain his actions at some point. If he does, it could provide clarification on what transpired, but for now, WWE might be setting the stage for Rhodes’ transformation into a full-fledged villain.
It seems like a return or action from Owens isn’t imminent, given the events immediately following the match. Although it wasn’t broadcasted on TV, social media was abuzz with footage from the live event. At one point, Owens delivered a piledriver to Rhodes and snatched the winged eagle Championship that Rhodes had brought for the event. Excited by his victory, Owens started celebrating at the entrance when Triple H appeared and shoved him aside, causing the Title to drop to the floor.
After that, Owens confronted Triple H, and Triple H stood his ground. A minor scuffle ensued as Triple H had referees guide Owens backstage, while he went to attend to Rhodes. You can watch the video of their altercation by clicking here.
