Tristan Thompson will always be on Kevin Love’s team.
Shortly following the tragic news of Miami Heat’s forward’s father, Stan Love, passing away at the age of 76, his former teammate and current Cleveland Cavaliers center-forward offered comfort on the court prior to their April 28 playoff match.
In a video posted on social media by Bleacher Report, the old friends were spotted having a touching, lengthy hug as they navigated through the bustling pre-game chaos surrounding them.
Even as far back as 2020, before the 36-year-old joined the Miami Heat in 2023, it was hard for him to imagine parting ways with his close friend, given the speculation that Tristan might get traded to a different team.
Kevin shared with Cleveland.com that his teammate was his brother. He expressed that he’d be ready to fight alongside him and even charge through a wall for him.
He’s truly exceptional,” he went on. “Being his friend for so long, it would be hard to see him leave. I’d love for him to stay, but if there’s an opportunity that suits him better, makes him happier, or gives him a chance to win a title, then by all means.
Despite ending up on different squads, their friendship has only grown stronger. In fact, it’s been a significant source of support for Kevin during this challenging time, as he deals with the passing of his father, who had a distinguished career with teams like the Baltimore Bullets and the Los Angeles Lakers.
Just prior to the game, Kevin wrote an emotional tribute that beautifully captured “the triumphant tale of a father and his son.
Kevin, in a heartfelt Instagram post on April 28th, captioned an old photo of his father and a recent one of their joined hands, saying, “You endured for a long time, Dad.” He noted that the toughest period was over the past six months, the most agonizing to observe in the last few weeks. Yet, even as you weakened at the end, I still saw you as a colossal figure – my guardian, my first hero.
He went on to say, ‘Without a doubt, you’ve been my foremost educator.’ Typically, this role is filled by someone like a father figure. You instilled in me valuable traits such as respect, kindness, humor, wit, ambition, hard work, resilience, and determination. I learned from you that failure can be insightful, and most importantly, time is our greatest asset.
