Tron: Ares Set to Deliver Fans Something They’ve Wanted for 43 Years

Ares, is no longer part of the digital world known as the Grid. This film is based on the initial Tron concept where people navigated a colorful digital universe on Light Cycles. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, production for this movie has been halted and it’s being brought into our physical world. During Disney’s CinemaCon event last Thursday, Jeff Bridges and Jared Leto appeared together to reveal some sneak peeks of Ares and offer hints about the upcoming sequel to Tron: Legacy from 2010. The storyline for this sequel picks up where the previous film ended, with Quorra (Olivia Wilde) and Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) leaving the Grid and entering our reality.

Indeed, it’s true: 43 years have passed since Syd Mead created the designs for the Light Cycles that captivated audiences in the 1982 movie Tron. Now, after all this time, those iconic virtual motorcycles are being brought to life in reality.

Ares,” where we find ourselves following an advanced digital entity named Ares. This entity is dispatched from the digital realm into our physical world to carry out a perilous assignment, serving as humanity’s initial interaction with artificial intelligence beings.

In my younger years, “Tron” consumed me completely. It introduced me to a realm I’d never known existed, and I craved more of it. This was shared by Leto during the gathering at the movie theater owners convention.

Back in the ’80s, there was a sense that the future was almost upon us, and the actor from Suicide Squad and Morbius echoed this sentiment. Forty years have passed, and now, the future finally reaches us on October 10th.

Joachim Rønning, known for his work on “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales”, who worked on the latest project with scripts by Jesse Wigutow (“Daredevil: Born Again”) and Jack Thorne (“Enola Holmes”), hinted earlier that “Tron: Ares” continues the tradition of innovative design, technology, and storytelling. He further stated, “Given the current times, it seems appropriate to revisit the Grid once again.

When Rønning shared with Empire magazine that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross from Nine Inch Nails would replace Daft Punk as the composers for Tron: Legacy, the director characterized Ares as having a rougher, more industrial feel, as suggested by the image above. He emphasized the significance of differentiating The Grid and reality. In that regard, Nine Inch Nails fits seamlessly into the new Tron universe we are developing.

In addition to Leto, Bridges, and Greta Lee from “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse”, the cast also features Evan Peters known for “X-Men: Days of Future Past”, Hasan Minhaj who was in “It Ends With Us”, Jodie Turner-Smith from the upcoming “Star Wars: The Acolyte”, Arturo Castro recognized for “The Menu”, Cameron Monaghan from “Star Wars Jedi”, and Gillian Anderson, renowned for her work on “The X-Files”.

Additionally, Leto plays a role as a producer alongside Sean Bailey, a former head of production at Walt Disney Studios, Jeffrey Silver known for The Little Mermaid, Justin Springer famous for Oblivion, Emma Ludbrook from Morbius, and Steven Lisberger, the creator-director of Tron’s original version.

Tron: Ares speeds into IMAX theaters October 10.
