Troy Baker Was Initially Reluctant to Star in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle

As a long-time admirer of Indiana Jones, I must admit that the prospect of any actor stepping into Harrison Ford’s iconic boots was initially daunting. However, after hearing Troy Baker’s story about landing the role, I find myself nothing short of thrilled!

Any Indiana Jones game is always going to have plenty of challenges to surmount, but probably chief among them would be having to find an actor who could step into the shoes of the legendary Harrison Ford, who embodies the role of Indiana Jones perhaps more than any actor has ever done for a fictional character. With the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, the prolific Troy Baker – known for his roles in The Last of Us, Death Stranding, Uncharted 4, Persona 4, and many, many more – is shouldering that burden, and based on everything that we’ve seen so far, doing a solid job of it- though if things had gone differently, Baker might not have been involved at all.

According to Baker himself, he initially wasn’t very enthusiastic about portraying Indiana Jones in MachineGames’ forthcoming first-person action-adventure game. However, after being encouraged by the performance director, Tom Keegan, he ultimately decided to give it a try.

Originally, I declined the Indiana Jones role as I was honestly terrified I wouldn’t measure up. Fortunately, Tom Keegan recognized my apprehensions and inspired me to audition for the part instead.

It’s worth noting that Baker’s fascination was sparked when he discovered that MachineGames sought more than just an actor capable of mimicking Harrison Ford’s performance; they wanted someone who could genuinely embody the character.

He mentioned that there were more than 1000 applicants for this role, implying a fierce competition not only with other gifted individuals but also within himself. What makes this situation unique is that it’s not just about delivering a flawless performance, but about embodying an authentic Indiana Jones. In essence, the key question is: does this portrayal genuinely resonate as the real Indiana Jones? This is the essence of our pursuit.

He added, “And then finally, there was a Zoom call with the MachineGames team, and also Tom Keegan and Todd Howard, and they said ‘we want to walk you through the story’ – and where I was nervous and insecure before, by the time they were done walking me through the story, I was beyond excited. I went from ‘I hope I get this job’ to ‘I really, really wanted it’.”

Interestingly, it came to light that executive producer Todd Howard, who initially conceived the story for the game, was not in favor of casting the actor as Indiana Jones.

“The most intriguing aspect of the story for me is when Todd Howard initially dismissed the idea of having Troy Baker in his game, as if to say ‘definitely not.’ I never imagined I’d actually be a part of it myself.

The adventure-packed game, “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle,” is set to debut on December 9, available on Xbox Series X/S and PC platforms. A version for PlayStation 5 will be released in the spring of next year.
