True Detective Return With McConaughey & Harrelson?

I’m thrilled to share that the talented duo, Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, have shown interest in revisiting the show we worked together on in its initial season. This captivating HBO crime drama, where our collaboration brought home five Emmy Awards, might just see us reunite once more.

Pizzolatto served as the primary creative driving force for the initial three seasons of True Detective, each season presenting fresh characters in the context of a true-crime themed mystery. The first installment of the show centered around detectives Rust Cohle, portrayed by McConaughey, and Marty Hart, played by Harrelson, as they delved into a string of murders connected to a shadowy figure known as “The Yellow King.

Nic Pizzolatto Discusses a Potential True Detective Return

During his latest interview on a podcast, Pizzolatto discussed his idea of revisiting the TV series “True Detective” featuring the return of McConaughey and Harrelson.

He mentioned, “I’ve got another tale for Cohle and Hart, you know. It might even become a reality someday.”

He shared, “There’s another yarn I have for Cohle and Hart, who knows if it could ever come to pass?”

Or simply:

He hinted, “I’ve got another idea for Cohle and Hart, maybe we’ll use it someday.

I’ve had conversations with McConaughey and Harrelson regarding the possibility of another round of True Detective, but as of now, I haven’t begun drafting any scripts for it.

He stated, “It’s not something I’ve authored; rather, it’s an idea that’s been percolating in my mind. We’ve discussed reuniting and moving forward with it. I believe the others are amenable to this concept, but the real question is whether this will ever materialize or not.

Additionally, the text discusses the reasons behind the writer’s departure from True Detective following its third season. For the fourth season, titled Night Country, Issa López assumed the role of showrunner.

He advised caution, stating that he was the one who chose to terminate his contract at the close of 2019. If he had provided them with an excellent script for another season of True Detective, he felt confident they would have agreed to it.

Pizzolatto expressed: “I was spiritually drained from navigating so much darkness and handling such heavy subject matter. Then, I gained full custody of my daughter, which required me to step into the role of a father. Consequently, I had to reduce my workload in 2020. So, I decided to take a step back. I believe it’s perfectly reasonable for HBO to continue developing the brand as we established it. I genuinely hope they create many more shows. Regarding the show itself, it might be best not to comment any further as it wouldn’t be fair to the creator.

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I found myself fielding queries on social media, pressing me to explain the fourth season of True Detective, despite the fact that I had no hand in its creation.

It seems perfectly reasonable and fitting for HBO to continue their brand, as we have cultivated something valuable together. I truly hope they produce many more like it.

He made clear that it wasn’t his show. Instead, it seemed like someone else had taken charge to preserve the brand. I have a feeling they’re planning a fifth season under the same creator’s leadership. I hope they succeed in their endeavor.

He clarified it wasn’t his production, but another team was managing it to keep the brand alive. It looks like they might be working on Season 5 with the original creator. I wish them good fortune as they move forward.

In more straightforward terms: Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson recently appeared in a commercial produced by Pizzolato aimed at attracting more filming opportunities to Texas. The advertisement showcased McConaughey delivering a speech reminiscent of his character from True Detective, discussing the essence of television and movie production. Later on, Dennis Quaid, Billy Bob Thornton, and Renee Zellweger made brief appearances in the commercial as special guests.

Regarding the upcoming installments of “True Detective,” HBO has announced that we can expect the series to venture from the frigid landscapes of Alaska to the picturesque shores of a coastal New York community, offering a new backdrop for its intricate narratives and gripping mysteries.

Nic Pizzolatto Has Kept Busy Since Leaving True Detective

  • His first major project after leaving True Detective was co-writing HBO’s Deadwood: The Movie, which earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Television Movie. He was uncredited on the finished film.
  • Nic Pizzolatto next teamed up with Netflix to write the Jake Gyllenhaal crime thriller The Guilty, about a LAPD cop battling inner-demons during a brutal case.
  • He is attached to write and direct the movie Easy’s Waltz, starring Al Pacino and Vince Vaughn in the story of a Vegas showman mentoring a younger, down-on-his-luck crooner.

I, Francesca Orsi, Head of Drama Series and Film at HBO, am excited to share that the upcoming project is set in New York, specifically Jamaica Bay. Similar to how Issa Rae powerfully expressed her thoughts with Night Countr y, she has even more to convey this time around. Despite a different setting, the impact is just as potent.

She expressed: “I’m genuinely thrilled about it! We have a compact team of writers, including Issa, who shares my enthusiasm. We’ve already provided feedback on the first two episodes, covering the entire season. To be frank, I can hardly contain my eagerness for this project to commence. It’s mainly about securing the right actors and preparing everything.

All four seasons of True Detective can be streamed now on Max.
