Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea adaptation comes to Prime Video after being scrapped by Disney Plus

As a dedicated fan of Jules Verne and a long-time subscriber to various streaming services, I can’t help but feel like a castaway adrift at sea, waiting for the sight of land after hearing about the untimely fate of Nautilus. The anticipation was palpable, the excitement built up, only to be dashed by the whims of corporate strategy shifts. But finally, the news that has been long-awaited by UK viewers like myself has arrived!

Originally commissioned for streaming on Disney Plus back in 2021, the 10-episode series Nautilus – based on Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea – encountered troubled waters in 2023.

The reason for this was that the streaming service decided to stop airing the show, which they had already completed filming, as part of their strategic change in direction.

I’m overjoyed to share that last year, we fans in the U.S. were blessed with the news that AMC would air the series here. On the other hand, our counterparts across the pond in the UK had been waiting patiently for any updates regarding its availability – a wait that seemed endless.

At last, some wonderful news is here! The series will make its debut on Prime Video in the United Kingdom and Ireland starting from Friday, 25th October 2024.

In this show, Shazad Latif, Georgia Flood, Thierry Fremont, and Céline Menville are the main characters, whereas Richard E Grant, Anna Torv, and Noah Taylor appear as special guests throughout its duration.

“In essence, ‘Nautilus’ reveals how Captain Nemo became who he is: A formerly wealthy Indian prince, wronged by his own people, seizes a powerful submarine design and flees with a motley crew into the waters of the Indian Ocean. Their mission? To exact vengeance on the brutal East India Mercantile Company.”

At approximately the same period when Nautilus was removed from Disney Plus, they also chose not to proceed with the release of a previously finished adaptation of The Spiderwick Chronicles.

That series also managed to find a new home, airing on the Roku channel earlier this year.
