Despite persistent rumors suggesting that the revival of the Twisted Metal series has been scrapped for more than a year now, recent news suggests that the potential new game would have significantly deviated from its predecessor’s gameplay style. As reported by Mp1st, a UI programmer involved in the aborted project described the game he contributed to as “Project Copper.
According to the programmer’s explanation, the game in question is likely a Twisted Metal title, given its classification as a classic PlayStation intellectual property (IP). Furthermore, it appears that this game will blend third-person fight sequences with the franchise’s signature vehicle combat. Additionally, the developers seem to be using Unreal Engine 5 for its creation.
The programmer additionally shared some fuzzy snapshots from an NDA-bound preliminary version of the game, featuring a prominent “Under Non-Disclosure Agreement” watermark. These images hinted at the inclusion of foot-based gameplay. The title’s description suggested that its main goal was to be the last player alive, suggesting it would be a battle royale style game.
In February 2024, it was announced that the game would be cancelled, along with job cuts affecting approximately 900 employees across Sony’s various studios. This round of layoffs also impacted notable studios such as Insomniac Games, Naughty Dog, Guerrilla Games, and Firesprite.
It was thought that the remake of “Twisted Metal” was initially being developed by Lucid Games, creators of “Destruction AllStars”. However, a job posting from as early as February 2023 hinted that Firespirite was actually in charge of creating the game instead.
It was thought that the reboot of Twisted Metal would be a live-service game, possibly due to Sony’s efforts to release more multiplayer live-service titles at the time. However, it appears that Sony has since changed its stance on this concept, with whispers suggesting that multiple live-service games in development were cancelled.
Last year, I played the much-hyped game “Concord”, only to find out it was a massive flop. The servers were taken offline less than a month after its release, which is quite unprecedented. This debacle seems to have left a significant impact on PlayStation’s studios, resulting in the closure of Firewalk Studios and the rumored halt of other projects under development following its failure.
Among the dropped live-service projects at PlayStation’s studios are “The Last of Us Online” and also a multiplayer aspect for “Marvel’s Spider-Man”. In simpler terms, they have stopped working on these online services related to “The Last of Us” and a multiplayer option for “Marvel’s Spider-Man”.
Previously, PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida expressed his views on the trend towards live-service games, stating that he would have resisted this emphasis during his tenure at PlayStation. He emphasized that Sony should have persisted in concentrating on its single-player, narrative-driven games, which have garnered both critical and financial success.
In a recent interview, Yoshida stated, “I was overseeing the yearly budget and deciding where resources should be directed towards game development.” He added that if Sony were to continue in this approach, it wouldn’t have been logical for them to halt creating titles like God of War or other high-quality single-player games and instead invest everything into multiplayer service games.
At the moment, Sony’s sole triumph in the live-service sector is “Helldivers 2,” a game that can be played on both PC and PlayStation 5.
