As a huge fan of the original “Twister” movie from the 90s, I’m beyond excited for Universal’s pseudo-sequel, “Twisters,” hitting theaters this weekend. The technology they’ve used to create bigger and more devastating storms is truly impressive.
About 30 years after the original “Twister” movie was a box office success, Universal’s follow-up film, titled “Twisters,” is raising the bar with advanced technology. This new movie, opening this weekend, can create larger and more destructive storms than before. Consequently, the production design team must build even more devastating environments to depict the chaos caused by the wilder weather. In an interview with ComicBook prior to the release of “Twisters,” stars Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Anthony Ramos discussed their harrowing experiences filming on the tornado destruction sets.
“During one of the most awe-inspiring days on set I’ve ever witnessed, in terms of production and design, they constructed an entire community,” Powell shared. “A monstrous tornado sweeps through this town, splitting houses in two as if by magic. Remarkably, some interiors remained untouched while others were obliterated – much like real life.”
“Despite the tornado destroying it, they had built a whole house filled with memories. As you explore these homes in the film, you can see photographs and real-life moments captured within their walls. It’s the intricate details like these that make this movie so extraordinary, as such depictions are not commonly found.”
An additional filming location for Twisters were real-life areas hit by tornados before, resulting in the destruction of several houses and structures depicted in the movie being caused by natural disasters.
Edgar-Jones added that numerous background actors in Twister were actual Red Cross volunteers, having experienced the devastation they portrayed in real life.
“During filming, there were numerous Red Cross members among our background actors and extras. Given their experience with actual devastation, the production carried a strong sense of reality and solemnity.”
In “Twisters,” I used to be a storm chaser named Kate Cooper, braving nature’s wrath until a tornado changed my life forever. Now, I watch extreme weather from the safety of my computer screen. But when a chance comes up to trial advanced gear, I hop on a plane to the Midwest and join the chase once more. My mission: follow twisters, and in doing so, cross paths with Tyler Owens, an Instagram sensation. The storms in Oklahoma are getting wilder, pushing us to cooperate and pool our distinct abilities to endure Mother Nature’s most extreme display.
Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Sasha Lane, Daryl McCormack, Kiernan Shipka, Nik Dodani, Katy O’Brian, and Maura Tierney lead the cast of “Twisters.” The film is directed by Lee Isaac Chung, with a screenplay by Mark L. Smith. Catch “Twisters” in theaters starting July 19th.
