Filming in Tornado Alley during tornado season must have been like living a real-life video game, albeit with higher stakes than any high score I could ever achieve!
In the movie “Twisters,” all the depicted tornadoes were special effects, however, this doesn’t imply that the cast and crew of the film were always safe from the action. Lee Isaac Chung’s acclaimed sequel to his legacy was filmed on-site in Oklahoma, a region known for its severe tornado outbreaks. Not only was the production set in Tornado Alley, but it also happened during the peak of the tornado season, which brought danger right to their doorstep.
Recently, ComicBook had a chat with Sasha Lane, star of the movie Twisters. The film is now accessible for purchase or rental digitally on various Video On Demand (VOD) platforms. In discussing the production process, Lane revealed an anecdote about undergoing weather training and discovering that they were in Oklahoma at arguably the most challenging time of the year.
Lane shared with us that he recalled our sessions at the weather center focusing on tornadoes, exploring their composition and what remains unknown. They also discussed the years with the most intense tornado activity to date, causing significant damage. It was during May, on the brink of filming tornadoes, when they mentioned, “May is the wildest season for us, and it’s just truly unfortunate.” This prompted Lane to look at Lee [Isaac Chung] and exclaim, “Why on earth are we shooting in tornado season in Oklahoma?!” – that’s some real authenticity!
In some hidden video recordings from the set of “Twisters”, you can see crew members keeping an eye on approaching storms nearby. However, it appears that during filming itself, they managed to steer clear of any extremely hazardous situations.
In the film Twisters, ex-storm chaser Kate Cooper, who has survived a harrowing tornado encounter, now keeps an eye on severe weather from her computer desk. When she’s presented with the chance to try innovative gear, Kate ventures to the Midwest to follow twisters, leading her towards a confrontation not just with the lethal storms but also with popular social media personality Tyler Owens. As Oklahoma’s storms grow more intense, these two must team up and utilize their distinct abilities to endure the wildest weather conditions conceivable.
