Twisters Star Glen Powell on No Kiss Backlash: “I’m Taking It Very Personally!”

As a longtime fan of disaster movies with a soft spot for romantic subplots, I found myself torn between the thrilling chase sequences and the budding romance in “Twisters.” The film delivered an adrenaline-pumping experience that left me on the edge of my seat, but it was the unresolved tension between leads Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell that had me hooked.

Despite the fact that Twisters was a beloved summer movie and one of the year’s most discussed films so far, there has been one issue that fans have been discussing since they saw it. The film blends elements of a romantic comedy with those of a disaster movie, but what left many viewers unsatisfied was the lack of an on-screen kiss between leads Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell when the credits rolled.

The decision not to show the characters kissing in the final scene, a move suggested by Steven Spielberg to steer clear of typical romantic cliches, has sparked debate among fans, particularly given the film’s focus on a powerful love story. Unsurprisingly, Powell, for instance, hasn’t been fond of the ensuing discussions.

In a conversation with Screen Rant, Powell shared that he’s made the “Twisters” kiss debate a personal matter. However, he emphasized that the crucial aspect is that the film has managed to keep audiences discussing it.

In a lighthearted manner, Powell playfully implied, “I’ve taken it quite personally.” He shared a fun fact from backstage where he got to share a kiss with Daisy Edgar-Jones, which, as he humorously suggested, was the most significant aspect. They both had an excellent time making the movie, and he expressed his immense pride in the final product.

“I really think that even that [backlash] shows that people care, which is really great. I just love how excited people have gotten about that movie, and Daisy and I send each other the TikToks and the gifs. There’s so much funny stuff coming out of it. It’s fun. That’s what summer movies are about. It creates this conversation and cultural moment, and people dress up and do the thing. It’s been really awesome. So, kiss or no kiss, everybody’s a winner.”

In the movie titled “Twisters”, Kate Cooper, a previous storm chaser, now spends her time monitoring severe weather conditions from a computer. However, when she’s given the chance to try out advanced gear, she heads to the Midwest to chase tornadoes. This sets her on a path not only towards confronting these deadly occurrences but also with internet sensation Tyler Owens. As Oklahoma’s storms grow more intense, they must join forces and utilize their distinct talents to endure the wildest weather conditions conceivable.

The movie titled “Twisters” features Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Sasha Lane, Daryl McCormack, Kiernan Shipka, Nik Dodani, Katy O’Brian, and Maura Tierney. The sequel was directed by Lee Isaac Chung from a screenplay by Mark L. Smith. You can catch “Twisters” in theaters or purchase/rent it digitally via various VOD platforms.
