Twisters Stars Confirm That Kiss Scene Was Cut Thanks to Steven Spielberg

As a passionate gamer and avid movie buff, I have to admit that “Twisters” has left me both intrigued and impressed. The dynamic between Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Tyler Owens (Glenn Powell) was intriguing, but their romance took a backseat to Kate’s personal growth. I applaud the decision to prioritize her character arc over a cliched romantic resolution.

In the hit movie “Twisters,” Kate Cooper, portrayed by Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Tyler Owens, played by Glenn Powell, engage in an intriguing will-they-won’t-they dynamic…yet their romance never fully develops. Contrary to popular belief, this underdevelopment was intentional as it paved the way for a more comprehensive character development for Kate. However, their love story, or lack thereof, doesn’t conclude at the movie’s end; instead, it continues and may be further explored if “Twisters” receives a sequel.

Edgar-Jones and Powell initially planned for their on-screen characters to exchange a kiss, which was even captured on film. However, executive producer Steven Spielberg recommended removing the scene.

In an interview with Collider, Edgar-Jones expressed her belief that the apparent “Spielberg note” in the film prevents it from becoming overly clichéd. She explained, “I believe it keeps the story going and adds depth, rather than marking an end. Their connection is strengthened by their mutual enthusiasm for a common cause.”

In my opinion, the film isn’t primarily about Kate and the other character falling in love. Instead, it’s about Kate rediscovering her passion for storm chasing. By the end of the movie, they have a common interest, which reignites Kate’s excitement and sense of belonging. A kiss might not accurately reflect the true resolution of the story. This perspective aligns with Spielberg’s approach, as seen in other films, where the focus is on personal growth and discovery rather than romantic entanglements.

As a gamer, I’ve noticed that in many stories, especially those involving relationships, there’s often a deeper love story unfolding beyond just the couple. It’s a classic narrative device. Take the ending of “Cheers,” for instance. For me, it wasn’t just about Sam and Diane; it was about their growth as individuals and how they found happiness in unexpected places. The real romance was with their personal journeys and the larger community that supported them along the way.

In “Twisters,” ex-storm tracker Kate Cooper, who has previously endured a destructive run-in with a tornado, now spends her time monitoring severe weather from the comfort of her computer. However, when she’s given the chance to utilize advanced technology, Kate ventures to the Midwest to chase twisters once more. This decision sets her on a dangerous path not only towards the unpredictable tornados but also towards social media sensation Tyler Owens. As the storms in Oklahoma grow increasingly fierce, these two individuals must come together and use their distinct abilities to confront the most extreme weather conditions known to man.

The film “Twisters” is headlined by Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Sasha Lane, Daryl McCormack, Kiernan Shipka, Nik Dodani, Katy O’Brian, and Maura Tierney. Lee Isaac Chung takes the helm as director for this sequel, with Mark L. Smith penning the script. “Twisters” hit theaters on July 19th.
