The manga “Evil Chronicles” initially debuted in 2004 by creator Etorouji Shiono, and since then, fans have eagerly anticipated whether the story of Koinzell would be adapted for television. This year, the franchise finally took that leap as studios Satelight and Staple Entertainment delved into the world heavily influenced by the “Seven Heroes.” With several episodes aired, the anime adaptation has seen some explicit scenes edited out. Recently, in an interview with the anime’s director, Takashi Naoya, the motive behind these significant changes has been revealed.
In essence, “Übel Blatt” is an intense and graphic manga series, which explores extreme violence in its action sequences and contains explicit sexual content that forms part of its narrative. The anime adaptation made a surprising choice to omit two major story arcs from the original manga, thus excluding significant villains and battles from the animated version. Although much of the violence still features in the currently streaming series on Amazon Video, the sexually-explicit scenes have been omitted entirely.
A Safe For Work Ubel Blatt
During an interview with Anime News Network, anime director Takashi Naoya candidly addressed the absence of certain explicit scenes from the manga in the anime adaptation. He explained, “Upon receiving the project, I recognized that some erotic aspects were present in specific parts of the source material. After consulting with the studio, the committee, and the original creators, we decided to focus on Köinzell’s character arc—his quest for revenge and eventual healing through his encounters. The main emphasis was on his transformation as he learns to overcome his anger and vengeance. To achieve this, we chose to eliminate the erotic elements, resulting in an adaptation that primarily highlights Köinzell’s growth.” Apart from these changes, Naoya aimed to remain faithful to the original work.
Naoya emphasized that he aimed to adhere closely to the original work without introducing excessive personal interpretations, but acknowledged that due to time constraints in anime production, some scenes may be eliminated depending on the project. For the series “Übel Blatt“, certain scenes were removed and the story was restructured. He understood that restructuring the story allowed for a unique tempo and offered insights into how the story should be perceived. When deciding which scenes to cut for this project, the emphasis was on depicting Köinzell’s journey as he forms new relationships after being betrayed by his companions, regains trust in others, and revolves the story around this central theme.
