Ever since Assassin’s Creed Shadows was first unveiled, it’s been embroiled in controversy – a situation that Ubisoft can hardly afford, given their precarious financial and market position, worsened by years of lackluster releases. A disappointing performance from Shadows could push Ubisoft into a difficult spot, with the looming speculation of its sale becoming reality rather swiftly. Unfortunately for them, more controversy surrounding the game is rearing its head once again.
The release date for Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been pushed back again, now set for March 20. Interestingly, this coincides with the 30-year anniversary of the Tokyo subway sarin gas attack, one of Japan’s most devastating acts of terrorism. This incident resulted in the deaths of 14 people and left over 5,800 others injured.
Indeed, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is located in Japan and has stirred some debate among Japanese gamers since its unveiling. Notably, the recent release date announcement for the game, though likely accidental, hasn’t been met with enthusiasm. This disapproval is evident in the responses and quote tweets about the delay on X. The controversy might not be as immense as the one surrounding one of the game’s two main characters, Yasuke, but it certainly isn’t insignificant either.
It’s extremely rare for Assassin’s Creed Shadows release date to shift a third time, given that Ubisoft likely requires it to launch in the first quarter of 2025 from a financial standpoint. Consequently, there’s little wiggle room left other than possibly setting the game around March 20 (not exact), but for reasons of sensitivity, not on March 20 itself. However, this is highly unlikely. If a change does occur, it will be announced swiftly. If it isn’t communicated by the end of next week, though, it’s almost certain that there won’t be any adjustments at all.
Currently, Ubisoft hasn’t addressed the recent Assassin’s Creed Valhalla debate. It’s unlikely that they will comment soon, given various circumstances, but should they decide to, we’ll promptly revise our report.
