Ubisoft ‘Deeply Disturbed’ by Abuse Allegations at Assassin’s Creed Shadows Support Studio

Ubisoft has addressed allegations made by People Make Games on YouTube, which suggest that an Assassin’s Creed Shadows support studio in Indonesia called Brandoville had instances of mental and physical abuse. Specifically, it was claimed that Kwan Cherry Lai, commissioner at Brandoville, mistreated employee Christa Sydney through physical and emotional means during her time at the company.

Initially, it’s said that Cherry Lai provided guidance to Sydney after a conflict, but this professional relationship allegedly turned into mistreatment. The alleged mental abuse started with compulsory daily prayers, making her write lines, constant scrutiny of her wardrobe, and public embarrassment in front of colleagues. It’s claimed that during the External Development Summit (XDS) in 2022, Cherry Lai only permitted Sydney to sleep for brief periods over the four days leading up to the event.

Individuals create games, but the situation escalated to a point where physical violence occurred. Sydney was compelled to record herself striking her own face 100 times, as well as causing herself a concussion by colliding with a door frame.

It has been reported that other employees at Brandoville have brought forth accusations against Cherry Lai. These allegations suggest that she has been misbehaving in various ways. One employee claims that a portion of their wages was withheld to manage their spending, while another asserts that Cherry Lai made her work despite the early arrival of her baby.

In reaction to the accusations, Ubisoft released this statement to Eurogamer: “We are greatly troubled by the recent claims concerning Brandoville Studios. We vehemently denounce any form of abuse, and our sympathies go out to the impacted staff.” It’s worth noting that Brandoville has contributed to other projects like The Last of Us: Part I for Sony and Age of Empires 4 for Microsoft as well.
