As a gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a tinge of nostalgia mixed with a touch of disbelief when I hear about Ubisoft’s plans for Assassin’s Creed. I remember the days of Assassin’s Creed 2 and Brotherhood, games that were not just fun to play but also had stories that resonated. Fast forward to today, and it seems like a new Assassin’s Creed game is as common as a Ubisoft open-world game with a checklist of predictable features.
Since its debut in 2007, the Assassin’s Creed series by Ubisoft has become one of their flagship titles, garnering immense popularity. However, with an abundance of releases within such a short period, some argue that the series has experienced a decline from its heyday, which many believe peaked around 2010 with games like Assassin’s Creed 2, Brotherhood, and Black Flag. While modern Assassin’s Creed games are generally well-received, there’s a consensus that the series has lost some of its initial shine due to the sheer number of games produced in such a short timeframe. In its 17-year history, there have been 14 mainline Assassin’s Creed games and 17 spin-offs, making it one of the most prolific series compared to others like Call of Duty or FIFA.
It seems Ubisoft is continuing to milk the Assassin’s Creed series for all it’s worth, as indicated by a recent report suggesting they plan to produce another 10 games over the next decade. Essentially, this means we can expect an Assassin’s Creed game every year, if simple arithmetic is to be believed. Given Ubisoft’s current financial and public image struggles, this might not come as a shock to many.
The report mentions that these projects are part of the lineup: Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Assassin’s Creed Witch (Hexe), an upcoming mobile title known as Assassin’s Creed Jade, a revamped version of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, and a multiplayer game resembling Fall Guys titled Assassin’s Creed Invictus.
According to a recent report, which originates from Insider Gaming and specifically, a trusted insider known as Tom Henderson, there are potential changes brewing for the Assassin’s Creed series. However, it’s important to remember that this information should be approached with caution, even though it aligns with Ubisoft’s current approach towards the Assassin’s Creed series since its beginning. If Assassin’s Creed Shadows doesn’t meet expectations (and early signs indicate this could be a possibility), it will be intriguing to observe if these plans will adapt in any way.
Currently, Ubisoft hasn’t responded to the latest report or the buzz it’s generated. It’s unlikely they will, but should anything change, we’ll promptly update this tale.
