Based on recent findings, it appears that Tencent and the Guillemot family, significant shareholders at Ubisoft, are contemplating launching a new business endeavor and potentially transferring some of Ubisoft’s intellectual properties (IP) to this new venture.
Word comes from Bloomberg in a paywalled story that cites people familiar with the situation.
It seems they are considering launching a joint project where Ubisoft’s established franchises may be housed, with Tencent having partial control over these assets.
Currently, Tencent holds approximately 9.99% of Ubisoft’s stock, whereas the Guillemot family, who founded the company, possesses around 14%.
The action is also aimed at boosting the worth of the struggling publishing house, which has faced falling value due to a series of underperforming publications and other challenges in recent times.
As a game enthusiast, I can’t say for sure what will happen to a particular intellectual property (IP) that Ubisoft currently owns, as no definitive choice has been made yet. The future of this IP remains uncertain.
2024 proved to be a particularly tough year for Ubisoft, as several of their projects fell short of projected sales figures. Titles like Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, Star Wars Outlaws, and XDefiant didn’t meet the mark, ultimately leading to the decision to close down XDefiant permanently within the coming months.
Beyond this, Assassin’s Creed Shadow’s release has been pushed back multiple times, impacting Ubisoft’s finances. Now, it’s set to launch in March.
