Ubisoft to Establish New Subsidiary Overseeing Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six

In the past few months, it’s been reported that Ubisoft and Tencent have been discussing a potential partnership, where Tencent would invest heavily in some of Ubisoft’s major franchises to launch a new joint venture. This collaboration is now officially confirmed.

Ubisoft is setting up a new company headquarters in France that will receive an investment of 1.16 billion euros from Tencent for a 25% ownership share. As of now, the name of this subsidiary remains unannounced. This newly formed entity will be responsible for overseeing, managing, and growing Ubisoft’s top three franchises: Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six.

The subsidiary acquires a “global, exclusive, permanent, and unalterable” right to manage the three properties, encompassing all current and future games. Ubisoft will still receive royalties from this venture. Under the leadership of a dedicated team and board of directors, the subsidiary aims to make quick, influential decisions in development, marketing, and distribution. This is intended to keep these brands relevant, attract new players, and continue delivering innovative gaming experiences for the foreseeable future.

The company announces that its new affiliate is committed to developing game environments intended to remain fresh and compatible across various platforms. With enhanced funding and expanded creative potential, this subsidiary aims to enhance the quality of single-player stories, frequently update multiplayer options, and introduce free-to-play features.

According to Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft’s CEO, a significant milestone is being reached today in the company’s journey. As they speed up their transition process, this move marks a pivotal moment for revamping Ubisoft’s business model. The aim is to make the company more adaptable and driven, with an emphasis on constructing robust game environments that continue to thrive over time. We’re also dedicated to cultivating strong brands, fostering growth in high-performing franchises, and developing new intellectual properties using advanced and innovative technologies.

By establishing a separate entity to drive development for three key franchise brands and welcoming Tencent as a minority shareholder, we are solidifying the worth of our assets, improving our financial standing, and setting optimal conditions for these franchises’ sustained growth and prosperity. This new entity will boast its own management team, tasked with reshaping these three brands into distinct ecosystems.

Our dedication lies in shaping a more streamlined, goal-oriented organization. Here, skilled teams will propel our brands forward, nurture up-and-coming franchises, and pioneer advancements in future technologies and services. Ultimately, we aim to craft engaging, unforgettable games that surpass players’ expectations, generating outstanding value for our shareholders and other partners.

Martin Lau, Tencent’s president, expresses enthusiasm about deepening our existing collaboration with Ubisoft via this investment, a move that underscores our unwavering faith in Ubisoft’s imaginative ideas and exceptional personnel to keep leading the industry. We believe these intellectual properties have great potential to grow into enduring evergreen gaming platforms, offering fresh, captivating gameplay experiences for gamers over time.

Ubisoft will retain control and administration of their owned properties like Ghost Recon, The Division, Rayman, among others. They will also persist in developing fresh intellectual properties, as well as providing advanced game engines and online services for top-tier productions.

Ubisoft plans to conclude this agreement by the end of 2025. They’ll share more information about their new affiliate, including its functions and future collaborations with Ubisoft, at a later time. So, keep an eye out for updates!
