Now, Microsoft Edge on Android supports two widely-used ad-blocking tools – uBlock Origin and its lighter version, uBlock Origin Lite. You can activate either of these options directly from your mobile browser.
Previously, it was necessary to change Edge’s language setting in order to activate uBlock Origin. However, this is no longer a requirement as the extension is now available on the standard, widely accessible version of Edge.
Leo Varela, who tracks the progress of several Microsoft apps, highlighted the addition on X.
uBlock Origin, a widely used ad-blocking tool, has encountered some limitations lately. Notably, Google Chrome transitioned to Manifest Version 3 (MV3) more recently, causing uBlock Origin to cease functioning within the browser. Similarly, the extension has become inoperable on various other browsers as well.
Mozilla Firefox will continue to support the API required for uBlock Origin to run.
Microsoft’s guidance on their support document concerning Manifest V3 indicates that the deprecation timeline for Manifest V2 extensions is yet to be decided (TBD). Should Microsoft maintain support for such extensions, Edge browser would retain a distinctive feature compared to Chrome, as it continues to accommodate them.
uBlock Origin causing Edge to crash
Following the release of uBlock Origin within the stable version of Edge, I conducted tests on multiple websites. As anticipated, this extension functions effectively, automatically blocking advertisements while offering customizable options to control the blocking of specific types of content.
It seems that the uBlock Origin extension may be encountering problems with Microsoft Edge on Android devices. You might notice that Edge occasionally shuts down when you use uBlock Origin.
From my perspective, I’ve come across varying accounts about its behavior, which seems like an intermittent problem. So far, I haven’t encountered any crashes with it, but some users have reported persistent issues.
Hopefully, the bugs are fixed soon. If not, Edge also supports AdGuard Adblocker.
How to use uBlock Origin on Microsoft Edge for Android
As an analyst, I noticed that uBlock Origin and uBlock Origin Lite became available on the Android version of Microsoft Edge without the need for an app update. However, it’s always advisable to ensure your Edge app is running the latest version for optimal performance and security.
To enable uBlock Origin or uBlock Origin Lite:
- Open Microsoft Edge for Android.
- Tap the menu button (three lines).
- Tap Extensions.
- Scroll down to uBlock Origin or uBlock Origin Lite and tap Get on the right-hand side of the extension name.
These same steps can be performed to get other extensions, such as Dark Reader, Keepa, and NordVPN.
