As someone who has spent countless hours swinging through virtual cityscapes as both Spider-Man and Peter Parker, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia reading about Uncle Ben discovering his nephew’s secret identity in Ultimate Spider-Man #11. Having played through numerous iterations where Aunt May was the one to pass down wisdom and guidance, it’s refreshing to see the dynamic shift to Uncle Ben.
In the Ultimate Universe, unlike Earth-616, Spider-Man struggles to maintain a distinction between his personal and superhero lives. Rather than separating them, as Earth-616’s Spidey does, Ultimate Spider-Man often blends work with play. Unlike his counterpart, Ultimate Spider-Man has been a superhero for a much shorter period and gained his powers while being a married father of two children. Being relatively new to the hero lifestyle, mistakes are inevitable for him, such as family members discovering his secret identity. However, an unexpected revelation could either pose trouble for Spidey or prove beneficial.
In issue #11 of “Ultimate Spider-Man”, the talented team of Jonathan Hickman, David Messina, Matthew Wilson, and VC’s Cory Petit are in charge. This installment marks Spider-Man’s initial encounter with Mister Negative, a villain from the Sinister Six led by Wilson Fisk. However, the heart of the narrative unfolds at a memorial service for those who perished during Tony Stark’s framing in the “Ultimate Invasion”. Among the casualties was Aunt May, leaving Uncle Ben as her bereaved husband.
As I stroll through Memorial Park with my uncle, we share memories of the past year since we lost Aunt May. It hits me hard as we walk, remembering her warm smile and gentle spirit. Suddenly, my uncle shares a thought about Aunt May, mentioning how proud she’d be of something I’ve been doing. Thinking he means my Spider-Man photography, I just nod in agreement. But then, an awkward silence falls between us. It’s not until we reach the park bench that Uncle Ben finally spills the beans – he knows my secret identity as Spider-Man.
Uncle Ben knows Peter Parker is Spider-Man
In an unconventional move, the comic series “Ultimate Spider-Man” reimagined the Spider-Man universe by swapping the traditional Peter Parker/Aunt May relationship with Peter Parker and Uncle Ben. Since Aunt May has primarily been a supporting character in the Spider-Man world, this alteration sets “Ultimate Spider-Man” apart from other series. Furthermore, the series introduces an amusing dynamic between Uncle Ben and J. Jonah Jameson as they work together as investigative journalists.
Since Uncle Ben is now aware of Peter’s dual identity, he can provide guidance and act as a confidant when Spider-Man requires advice. Moreover, it’s comforting for Peter that his immediate family members are privy to his secret identity as Spider-Man, as May was the one who initially discovered her father’s superhero persona by witnessing him change into his Spider-Man costume. Later on, Mary Jane and their son Richard found out about it a few months later.
Uncle Ben advises Peter to keep a tight lid on his double personas for safety reasons. Hiding this fact might not only protect him, but also the well-being of those he holds dear.
