In a stunning twist revealed in Ultimate Spider-Man issue #16 by writers Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto, it turns out that the enigmatic Mysterio, who is part of Kingpin’s Sinister Six along with Mr. Negative, Black Cat, Kraven the Hunter, and Mole Man, is none other than Gwen Stacy-Osborn – the CEO of Oscorp and wife of Harry Osborn (secretly the Green Goblin in disguise). This clever deception was played out right before our eyes.
In actuality, the character known as Ultimate Mysterio is none other than Quentin Beck, since there isn’t a single Mysterio but five. Gwen Stacy assumed her father’s role in the enigmatic group called Mysterio, a secretive collective that possesses knowledge about the truth behind Marvel’s revamped Ultimate Universe: Earth-6160 has been subtly manipulated by the Maker, a multiverse Reed Richards who governs from concealment with his covert council of supervillains.
Gwen stated during the Mysterio ritual, ‘The world as we know it is a deception, and it’s by understanding and mastering these deceits that we gain true insight.’ She continued, ‘Our skills are ancient, predating this illusion. Our strength transcends time. The amulet is passed from mentor to apprentice, one to wear, five to share. We embody… the Mysterio.’
Following the merger of Oscorp with Stark Industries, due to the demises of Norman Osborn, Obadiah Stane, and Howard Stark, Gwen disclosed to a group of Mysterios that she’d uncovered the true origins of our world. “This world is but an intricate deception spun by a single individual,” she stated. “A single man crafting a lie so colossal, it managed to hoodwink all of humanity.” (In Hickman’s Ultimate Invasion, it was revealed that the Maker manipulated time travel to redesign the world, creating an alternate reality similar to Earth-616 before the Maker interfered in 1963.)
In Ultimate Spider-Man #14, it was discovered that Gwen-Mysterio had staged Harry’s death and later killed Kraven when he exposed their identities as Spider-Man’s enemies, the Green Goblin and Mysterio, in the Savage Land. With everyone thinking he was deceased, Harry’s Green Goblin persona and Gwen’s Mysterio were able to wage war against the Maker.
In this storyline, there’s a significant turn of events linked to the primary universe. When Harry Osborn perished due to the Goblin Formula in issue #200 of Spectacular Spider-Man (1993), it was later discovered that Norman Osborn, who had apparently died from being impaled by his own Goblin glider in issue #122 of the classic Amazing Spider-Man (1973), actually survived. This revelation also unveiled that the original Green Goblin was the mastermind behind the Clone Saga, as depicted in issue #75 of Spider-Man (1996). Marvel published a standalone comic, Spider-Man: The Osborn Journals, to detail the events leading up to this retcon and how Norman orchestrated things from his secret hideout in Europe.
Norman found himself attracted to The Scrier Cabal, an ancient, enigmatic organization with a clandestine agenda – accumulating infinite wealth, power, and dominion under the guise of supernatural influence. Eventually, he assumed leadership of this mysterious group, subsequently joining the Gathering of Five.
1998’s “Exciting Spider-Man” #32 marked the start of a five-part series titled “The Gathering of Five“, which spanned issues from Amazing Spider-Man, Spectacular Spider-Man, Sensational Spider-Man and simply Spider-Man. This story arc derived its name from a gathering of five individuals and five ancient artifacts, which were said to bestow power through both scientific and supernatural means.
Instead of the Mysterios exchanging an amulet among their group of five, the ritual performed by The Five revolved around collecting five separate pieces, each of which would bestow one of five special abilities upon successful collection: Power, Knowledge, Immortality, Madness, or Death. Engaging in the Rites of The Five was a daring move, but once Norman managed to amass all five fragments, he found himself with the option to confer one of these five powers onto each member of The Five.
In issue #441 of the 1998 comic series The Amazing Spider-Man, the Five performed a ritual and each received their respective abilities: Power (Osborn), Knowledge (Mattie Franklin), Immortality (Gregory Herd), Madness (Morris Maxwell), and Death (Madame Web). However, there was an unexpected twist in the ceremony of the Five: the power that was meant for someone else was actually bestowed upon Mattie (who became Spider-Woman), and Osborn’s “gift” turned out to be something he already possessed: Madness. It seems that, like with Mysterio, not everything was as it appeared.
Ultimate Spider-Man #16 is on sale now from Marvel Comics.
