In the latest edition of Marvel’s Ultimate series, fans are absolutely thrilled and in agreement that it surpasses all other parts of Marvel Comics. Unlike its predecessors, which closely followed traditional Marvel storylines, the new Ultimate Universe offers a fresh take. The original stories leaned heavily on classic Marvel themes, while the new universe has turned things around. This shift results in unique interpretations of classic Marvel characters like Spider-Man, X-Men, The Avengers (The Ultimates), and Black Panther in titles such as Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate X-Men, The Ultimates, and Ultimate Black Panther. The latest addition to this series, Ultimate Wolverine, adopts a similar approach, breathing new life into familiar Wolverine motifs.
Initially, the revamped Wolverine debuted in “Ultimate Universe: One Year Later”. This was unexpected for fans because a character labeled as “Weapon X” with an adamantium skeleton had been previously introduced in the 2024 Marvel Free Comic Book Day Special. Yet, this unexpected arrival turned out to be quite delightful. In “Ultimate Wolverine”, we see a familiar twist on the old theme of the mind-controlled supersoldier, which has significantly influenced Wolverine’s background as depicted in “Ultimate Wolverine” issue #1. However, the new interpretation of this trope in “Ultimate Wolverine” manages to keep it feeling fresh and exciting.
The New Ultimate Wolverine Takes a Large Dash of Winter Soldier to Makes Things Fresh
In the freshly crafted Ultimate Realm, malevolence reigns supreme. This realm was fashioned by The Maker, a former Reed Richards of the old Ultimate Universe, striving for perfection in every aspect. The regime is governed by The Maker’s Council. Notably, mutants occupy a significant role in this world; Russia and Japan, known as Hi no Kuni, are home to these extraordinary beings. Russia is under the leadership of Colossus, his sister Magik, and recurring adversary Omega Red, while Hi no Kuni is ruled by Sunfire. The primary mutant sanctuary lies in Russia, where they’ve acquired the ultimate asset—Wolverine. The debut issue of Ultimate Wolverine gives insights into their manipulation of Wolverine, such as bonding adamantium to his skeleton and devising means to control his mind, while also hinting at his past through the targeting of Nightcrawler.
As an ardent cinema-goer captivated by the world of comic books, especially the character of Wolverine, I’ve seen him undergo numerous transformations over the years. In one intriguing narrative, we find the Wolverine from the Ultimate Universe – a mind-controlled assassin, a role familiar to many Wolverine enthusiasts across various timelines.
In another reality, the 616 universe, Wolverine was intended to be an assassin under the control of the Western powers. Throughout both primary and alternate universes, tales abound about this brainwashed version of Wolverine. In the ’90s, his solo title delved deep into the psychological repercussions of Weapon X on Wolverine’s psyche. It seems that the path for Ultimate Wolverine is following a similar trajectory; it’s hard to imagine this version of Wolverine remaining under the control of Colossus, Magik, and Omega Red. Rest assured, there will be stories about him rediscovering his true identity, an aspect he currently cannot recall.
While this narrative may not be entirely novel for longtime Wolverine fans, the anticipation for this book and its secrets is palpable. This journey promises to be as enthralling as any previous Wolverine saga.
As a die-hard Marvel fan, let me tell you why I’m excited about this new take on Wolverine. This time around, they’re reimagining him as the Ultimate Winter Soldier, and it makes perfect sense! You see, the original Winter Soldier was Bucky, who survived the explosion of that drone plane Cap thought had killed him. The Soviets turned Bucky into a brainwashed supersoldier, keeping him in stasis when they weren’t using him.
This is exactly what’s happening in Ultimate Wolverine. In the first issue, we see soldiers discovering a severely injured Wolverine after a battle that seems to have involved Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Mystique against the Eurasian Republic. They bring him back to Russia, where they start conducting experiments on him. The second issue reveals that the Eurasians learned how to bond adamantium to his skeleton from the research stolen decades ago by the Maker after he killed Doctor Cornelius of the Weapon X project.
They’ve wiped much of his memories, put in place safety measures to control him, and keep him in stasis between missions. They even call him their Winter Soldier! Can’t wait to see where this story goes!
The initial two volumes of this book share a distinct resemblance to classic Wolverine tales from the past, yet incorporating the Winter Soldier angle brings a fresh perspective. A significant challenge with superhero comic books is their tendency to follow repetitive patterns. Superheroes are rooted in specific tropes, and no matter how much we try to alter things, the original state is always restored. Periodically, Wolverine encounters Weapon X-related incidents. For readers who have been following Wolverine since the ’90s, many of these stories will seem familiar as they form a significant part of Wolverine’s character. In essence, Ultimate Wolverine is rejuvenating the old by introducing the Winter Soldier.
Ultimate Wolverine Could Become the Best Version of Both Weapon X and the Winter Soldier
Stories featuring Weapon X can be highly engaging, yet they sometimes fall into predictable patterns, which is a recurring issue whenever Wolverine delves back into this narrative. Pinnacle Weapon X tales like “Weapon X” and “The Shiva Scenario” set the bar high, but they originate from over three decades ago. Since then, most Weapon X narratives have been mediocre at best, with exceptions such as “Assault on Weapon Plus” matching the quality of earlier stories because they revisit familiar territory. As for the Winter Soldier, its core storyline started twenty years ago. “The Winter Soldier” is a standout tale and difficult to surpass. However, Ultimate Wolverine might just manage to outshine both the best Weapon X stories and “The Winter Soldier”.
In the fresh landscape of the Ultimate Universe, “Ultimate Wolverine” has been skillfully mining its rich potential. The first two installments of this comic have seamlessly blended thrilling action sequences with captivating backstory, immersing readers in the Eurasian Republic’s Directorate X. By cleverly merging elements from Weapon X and Winter Soldier, the creators have breathed new life into these concepts. With a wealth of tales yet untold – such as the mystery surrounding Logan’s past before he became the Winter Soldier and the intrigue surrounding the leadership of the Eurasian Republic and Directorate X – readers could be witnessing a saga that will stand the test of time. This is all thanks to writer Chris Condon and artist Alessandro Cappuccio finding innovative ways to reinterpret familiar themes.
