In a fresh take on the classic “Weapon X” narrative, the latest issue #4 of Ultimate Wolverine stands out among the two Ultimate mutant comics as it leans more towards tradition. This captivating issue offers fans an engaging reinterpretation of the storyline. Towards the end, a significant twist unfolds as it’s unveiled that the Eurasian Republic possesses the world’s most potent mutants – none other than Charles Xavier and Jean Grey. An additional revelation on the final data page hints at a previously unknown friendship between Xavier and Magneto in the 6160 universe, a bond that could shape future events, even though the Eurasians don’t currently hold Magneto captive.
The bond shared by Xavier and Magneto significantly contributes to the success of the X-Men team. Magneto, being a complex character, has seen Xavier evolve beyond his initial role as a benevolent guide. Over time, particularly in recent years, their dynamic seems to have reversed, with Magneto showing more heroic traits and Xavier displaying increasingly villainous ones in the X-Men narrative. This evolving relationship offers readers insights into where this duo might be heading in the upcoming Ultimate Universe.
Magneto and Xavier Is Marvel’s Most Important Friendship
Initially, Xavier and Magneto had no bond other than being adversaries. Their ideologies were polar opposites; Xavier sought harmony among mutants and humans, while Magneto championed the supremacy of mutantkind. However, renowned X-Men author Chris Claremont redefined their dynamic. This transformation had two significant aspects. Firstly, Claremont delved into Magneto’s Holocaust past, humanizing him and making him more relatable. Secondly, they crossed paths in Israel while aiding Holocaust survivors, forging a friendship during this time that became foundational to their relationship. Over the years, their perspectives on humans and mutants hardened, but their friendship remained crucial. Eventually, Xavier entrusted Magneto with the leadership of the Xavier Institute when he embarked on a journey into space alongside his girlfriend, Shi’Ar Empress Lilandra Neramani.
Due to comics often maintaining the existing situation, Magneto and Professor X found themselves at odds once more when Magneto discovered that Xavier and Moira MacTaggert were attempting to alter his thoughts. This led to Xavier erasing Magneto’s memory for removing Wolverine’s adamantium, and upon his return, their enmity resumed. However, they eventually collaborated on the destroyed island of Genosha, which marked a return to friendship. During the Krakoa Era, their bond grew stronger than ever, and it was also unveiled that they had been secretly cooperating with Moira for years to establish the mutant nation of Krakoa. Over time, Magneto and Professor X’s relationship has significantly driven X-Men narratives, and introducing them into the Ultimate Universe could pave the way for intriguing developments.
Magneto Is Going to Want Revenge for What Was Done to Xavier
In the panel you see over Jean Grey, that’s the present-day version of Charles Xavier from a different universe, Earth-6160, as the original Xavier perished in the Eurasian Republic, where he was held captive and no longer needed his frail body. It’s disclosed in the issue’s final data page that Jean Grey is the last known Omega-level mutant alive, while Magneto is mentioned, but there’s no word on his fate, which could pose a significant threat to the Eurasian Republic.
The story hints at a potential alliance between Xavier, Magneto, and Jean Grey in controlling the world, suggesting that they had a history together and possibly worked together for mutants’ rights as they did in the Marvel Comics universe. Their imprisonment by Directorate X, an Eurasian Republic division responsible for handling mutant affairs, leaves Magneto as a free agent, potentially seeking retribution for Xavier’s capture. This could imply that Magneto may lead a group of mutants, known as the Opposition, who fight against the Eurasian Republic. These developments could pave the way for intriguing future plotlines and possibly signal the impending downfall of the Eurasian Republic.
