In contrast to how Ultimate X-Men introduced mutants from the Ultimate Universe, it wasn’t the preferred choice for conventional X-Men fans who were yearning for a series reminiscent of their beloved X-Men books with a familiar status quo. Ultimate Wolverine, however, delivered just that, featuring an incredibly brutal version of Wolverine that readers hadn’t seen in a while. The third issue of Ultimate Wolverine is another fantastic addition to the series and as promised, it introduces three characters crucial to the storyline’s future development. Two of these characters have a rich history with Wolverine – Gambit and Kitty Pryde – while the third is a beloved character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe – Natasha Romanov, known in this issue as Romanova, better recognized as Black Widow.
In contrast to her movie portrayal, Black Widow boasts a rich comic book history that significantly differs. Unlike the films where she emerged from the Red Room and was not as old, in comics, Black Widow is depicted as older, with roots tracing back to World War II. During this era, she crossed paths with Wolverine and Captain America in the iconic “Uncanny X-Men” comic issue #268, which remains one of the most cherished early ’90s X-Men stories.
Wolverine and Captain America Saved Black Widow’s Life from the Hand In WWII
The story unfolds in Madripoor where Captain America is pursuing Hydra members. In the midst of his chase, he encounters Ivan, a Russian man under attack by ninjas from the Hand. The duo appears on the verge of defeat until Wolverine intervenes, assisting them in defeating the ninjas. They then head to Seraph’s bar, Wolverine’s regular haunt. There, they learn about an alliance between the Hand and Nazis, who have kidnapped a child Ivan was safeguarding – Natasha Romanov, a young girl. The men launch an attack on the Nazi’s limo to rescue her, with Wolverine taking a bullet for the girl. Ivan and Captain America manage to escape with her, assuming Wolverine is dead. However, they are unable to reach the American consulate due to the Nazis and Hand being present there. Just when all seems lost, Wolverine makes one final appearance, saving them and leading them to an escape plane.
During my childhood years, I lived in Russia before eventually finding myself within the Red Room, where I crossed paths with the Winter Soldier in the 1950s. A love story unfolded between us, as I was later subjected to the Infinity Formula, which granted me extraordinary aging-slowing and physical abilities.
During the Cold War era, Wolverine and I were like ships passing in the night, but our paths crossed again when we became superheroes. We collaborated with the X-Men to dismantle the Hand’s grip on Madripoor and later teamed up with Captain America in a series following Uncanny X-Men #268, known as Wolverine: Madripoor Knights.
Wolverine has since become more than just an ally to me; he’s like an uncle that I hold close to my heart.
Ultimate Black Widow Is the Ultimate Wild Card in Ultimate Wolverine #3
In the third issue of Ultimate Wolverine, Black Widow makes her debut stepping out of a cabin in snowy Smolensk. She encounters Gambit and Kitty Pryde who are there to hire her services. Despite her eagerness for combat, Gambit requires a driver instead, so she teams up with the duo. This sequence is intriguing because it appears they’re unaware of Black Widow’s true identity. As the issue unfolds, we learn from a mission briefing given to Eurasian Alliance troops that they are hunting down Gambit, Kitty, and none other than the infamous Black Widow, who has reportedly gone AWOL.
From what I can see, Natasha seems genuine, yet there’s an underlying suspicion that she might be a covert agent. The Eurasian Alliance, known for their cunningness, are likely searching for their adversaries, whom they refer to as the Opposition. It wouldn’t be surprising if they deployed someone like Natasha to infiltrate them. Announcing her escape adds authenticity to her defection story. The outcome remains uncertain, but it’s one of many intriguing twists in this captivating narrative.
