Ultimate X-Men Revives Shadow King on the Trippy Astral Plane!

The unique comic series, Ultimate X-Men, offers a fresh perspective on the X-Men universe, centering around a group of Japanese high school girls navigating their mutant abilities in an alternate Japan called Hi No Kuni. Despite some criticism leveled against it, Ultimate X-Men is still highly regarded by many fans. Some readers may not be keen on the book due to its departure from their expectations of what the X-Men should be, but it retains numerous references to the original X-Men characters. The recent issues of Ultimate X-Men, especially the last two, have made significant nods to the classic X-Men storylines, as the team confronts their initial major crisis, a test set by the Maester and the Shadow King. The Shadow King is a well-known antagonist in the X-Men universe, and his portrayal in Ultimate X-Men shares many similarities with the original 616 version of the character, including the source of his power.

In the last couple of conflicts, the X-Men have clashed with Shadow King and a twisted version of fan favorite Armor, known as Dark Armor. This confrontation appears to unfold on the Astral Plane, a realm that has historically been significant for the X-Men and Marvel Universe. The Astral Plane’s emergence is a significant development, not just for Shadow King personally, but also for the upcoming storylines in Ultimate X-Men.

The Astral Plane Is the Playground of Some of Marvel’s Most Important Characters

The Astral Plane, a realm that initially appeared before the Shadow King emerged, has long been associated with the Shadow King as his dwelling. In the early days of Doctor Strange, created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, this plane was frequently visited by Strange during his magical journeys. Ditko’s portrayal of the Astral Plane is one of the most psychedelic visuals in Marvel Universe history, filled with surreal structures that made it unlike anything readers in the ’60s had previously encountered. Over time, the Astral Plane expanded its influence beyond Doctor Strange comics and became significant within the X-Men universe. It is a realm where every human mind touches, but only those with psychic or magical abilities can manipulate it. With Professor X’s telepathic powers, he could traverse the Astral Plane, enabling him and other potent psionic entities to engage in battles within this plane.

Initially, Xavier met the formidable 616 Shadow King in Cairo, leading to a fierce clash on the ethereal Astral Plane. This plane serves as a home for the most potent psychic abilities, and the Shadow King’s connection to it is exceptionally unique within comic book lore. The villain known as Amahl Farouk is the Shadow King, but he essentially acts as a vessel; centuries ago, Farouk was a powerful telepathic mutant discovered by the Shadow King from the Astral Plane, who subsequently bonded with him. On the Astral Plane, the Shadow King poses a severe threat, even overpowering Xavier, who is typically considered the strongest telepath on Earth. In an unprecedented move, the Shadow King captured Xavier’s consciousness within the Astral Plane, enabling his survival beyond death. Interestingly, entities have been confined in the Astral Plane before. The introduction of the Astral Plane to the Ultimate Universe carries significant weight, given Shadow King’s pivotal role.

The Astral Plane Opens Up the Possibilities for the Shadow King

Introducing the Shadow King as a primary antagonist in Ultimate X-Men came as a surprise, but it offers numerous opportunities for storytelling. The Shadow King is one of the most formidable and underestimated adversaries among the X-Men villains. His telepathic abilities posed a constant threat to the team, and he aimed to exploit the link between the Astral Plane and human minds to achieve deity status. Unlike the 616 Shadow King, who is a formidable psionic predator with far greater aspirations, the Ultimate Shadow King has been primarily focused on transforming Armor into an echo of himself – but it seems this focus may shift soon.

The Head of the Children of the Atom, known as the Maester, employs the powers of the Shadow King to enter the Astral Realm with a larger purpose in mind for mutants. He’s even collaborating with the minions of the Maker to misuse this realm for nefarious intentions. However, it seems that the Shadow King has his own objectives and control over the Astral Realm. It appears that the Maester and the Shadow King may have conflicting interests, perhaps regarding Armor, and the introduction of the Astral Realm could be a prelude to their eventual disagreement.
