Ultraman: Rising Director Divulges Details About the Film’s Sequel

As a lifelong admirer of Japanese pop culture and a passionate fan of the iconic Ultraman, I can’t help but feel an immense sense of excitement and anticipation for the potential sequel to “Ultraman: Rising.” The director’s vision for “Ultraman: Fallen” sounds nothing short of electrifying, promising a deeper exploration of Emiko Sato’s character and delving into some weighty themes.

For over four decades, Ultraman has been a beloved figure in Japanese pop culture, but recently, there’s been a significant transformation in this iconic superhero. Teaming up with Tsuburaya Productions, Netflix brought Ultraman back to life, and the animated film “Ultraman: Rising” was born. This revitalized the origin story of Ultraman for a new generation, and shortly after its release, “Ultraman: Rising” gained cult status. With the movie’s director now revealing plans for a sequel, fans are eagerly awaiting Netflix to greenlight another installment.

At the 2024 Lightbox Expo, Shannon Tindle and John Aoshima jointly unveiled details about their work on Ultraman: Rising. During the event, they spoke candidly about the project’s development. When queried about a potential sequel, Tindle openly discussed his ideas for it.

On social media, Tindle expressed that even though a follow-up to “Ultraman: Rising” might not materialize, he’s eager to share an idea he’s been developing independently. As for his vision for “Ultraman: Rising“, it seems nothing less than flawless.

Ultraman: Rising Has a Sequel in the Works (But There’s a Catch)

As reported by Collider, the director has revealed that the working title for his upcoming sequel is “Ultraman: Fallen“, and it promises to delve into challenging themes. In the meantime, the script for the movie is being penned in secret. The director, Tindle, shared that the film will primarily focus on Emiko Sato, Ken’s long-missing mother. This forthcoming movie will unfold Emiko’s story as she is unveiled as the creator of the Kaiju Defense League, the adversaries from the original film. “Ultraman: Fallen” will then center around Emiko’s strained relationship with her family, particularly Ken, who is on a journey to understand his role as Ultraman.

Additionally, you can expect to see some fresh monsters or kaijus appearing in the storyline. Rest assured, these new threats won’t pose a problem for our audience. As for Ultraman: Fallen, it seems Earth may face further perils, potentially originating from the kaiju’s homeland. Regarding Ultraman: Rising, the sequel’s future remains uncertain, but fans remain optimistic that the narrative will carry on.

It’s evident that Tindle expresses optimism regarding the future, yet the director acknowledges that a sequel isn’t automatically assured. At this year’s Lightbox Expo, Aoshima was cautious when questioned about a sequel. Since Netflix can be unpredictable with its decisions on whether to produce sequels, it’s challenging to foresee if Ultraman: Rising will receive one, as it currently stands in a precarious position.

It Is Time to Put Respect on Ultraman’s Name

There’s a lot of anticipation about what’s to come for Ultraman, especially among fans who remember him from back in the day. This iconic superhero made his debut in 1966 and has been a household name throughout Asia. Unfortunately, it’s taken a long time for Ultraman to make waves in the US, where Superman was more popular. However, with the rise of streaming services and global film distribution, Ultraman is finally gaining recognition beyond Asian borders.

In the year 2022, the superhero captivated audiences with “Shin Ultraman,” and it was Hideaki Anno who played a significant role in this. As both writer and co-producer, Anno collaborated closely with director Shinji Higuchi to breathe life into the blockbuster hit. Following their successful collaboration on “Shin Godzilla,” Anno’s high-budget production marked a new chapter for Ultraman, while they also embarked on another reimagining project with “Shin Kamen Rider” in 2023.

Apart from movies, the character “Ultraman” has also thrived in comic books. Marvel and Tsubaraya have collaborated on a crossover titled “Ultraman x Avengers“. Additionally, the hero has been adapted into an anime series through Netflix. After the 2011 release of the “Ultraman” manga, an anime adaptation was commissioned for the show, and you can now watch it on Netflix. Fingers crossed that Netflix will add more titles like “Ultraman: Fallen” to their collection soon.
