In North American cinemas on June 6th, the second movie in the “Dandadan” series titled “Evil Eye” premiered, outperforming the box office earnings of its precursor, “First Encounters”. According to Box Office Mojo, “Evil Eye” debuted at the eighth spot in the US box office, grossing over $3 million. Compared to “First Encounters”, which made $1 million during its opening weekend, “Evil Eye” earned more than three times as much at the theater. Notably, both “Dandadan” films are compilations that encompass the initial three episodes of their respective seasons. Specifically, “First Encounters” includes the first three episodes of Season 1, while “Evil Eye” covers the opening trio of episodes for Season 2.

Before their television premieres, both films functioned as prequels. “Evil Eye” garnered more success at the box office due to the anime being released on Netflix following “First Encounter’s” theater debut. While “Dandadan” was building steam before its October 4th, 2024 release, it was still an unproven and new brand during the run of “First Encounters”. However, the series saw a rise in popularity, eventually becoming one of Netflix’s most-watched shows later in 2024. The significant box office earnings of “Evil Eye” demonstrate the growth of the brand since it became available for streaming.

The rise of evil connotations is seen as companies tap into the increasing popularity of anime. It’s anticipated that anime will reach new heights by 2025, with major players like Netflix, Amazon, and Disney pouring substantial investments. Notably, films such as “Demon Slayer – The Movie: Mugen Train” have paved the way for anime films to receive theatrical screenings, a phenomenon unheard of a decade ago. In the U.S., platforms like Crunchyroll, Netflix, and Hulu offer streaming services for shows like “Dandadan“, while GKIDS Films handles the theatrical releases for films like “First Encounter” and “Evil Eye“.

The series “Dandadan” is an action-comedy romantic show, derived from its manga source, revolving around two high school students unraveling supernatural mysteries with their classmates and family. Notably, the male lead, affectionately called Okarun, gets possessed by a spirit, granting him extraordinary abilities. The second season and the movie “Evil Eye” follow on from the first’s suspenseful finale, where Momo finds herself in a hot spring surrounded by men. Simultaneously, Okarun and his ally Jiji stumble upon a secret room in Jiji’s house, filled with protective charms.

In July 2025, the second season of “Dandadan” is set to debut on Netflix. They’ve unveiled several fresh trailers for the upcoming season, some of which include the English Dub version. One trailer for “Evil Eye” depicts Jiji getting overtaken by a malevolent spirit, leading to an intense action sequence against the Evil Eye entity. The “Evil Eye” movie’s trailers emphasize the battle between Okaru and the possessed Jiji. Following the “Evil Eye” storyline, the anime will delve into the Cursed House Arc, where the main characters uncover a fresh evil hiding beneath a haunted edifice.
