In the realm of superhero comics, DC Comics has established a strong reputation for creating characters that are extraordinarily powerful compared to their counterparts at Marvel. Even in the early days, known as the Golden Age, DC’s heroes and villains were formidable. For instance, Superman might not have been the most powerful character, but he was supported by other heroes such as the Spectre, Doctor Fate, and Green Lantern, all of whom possessed abilities that allowed them to accomplish almost anything at will. It seemed as though every superpowered hero in DC’s roster had incredible strength, with their powers only growing more intense as we entered the Silver Age. During this time, heroes from the DC Multiverse would reach their zenith of power, with Superman hurling planets and traveling through time, while the Flash could traverse both time and space, and villains like Brainiac were capable of shrinking entire planets. This is all before we even touch upon villains such as the Anti-Monitor.
Following the “Crisis on Infinite Earths”, the strength levels dropped significantly but have since been gradually increasing. Today, it’s much like the Silver Age era, where heroes had powers suitable to overcome each challenge, and villains were slightly more powerful to provide a challenge. These seven DC characters stand out for their extraordinary power levels, reflecting the often-exaggerated power scales within the DC Multiverse.
7) Wally West
Among the Flash characters, Wally West stands out as the one with the highest power level and speed capabilities over an extended period. His mastery of the Speed Force is almost unparalleled, enabling him to perform feats that would be mere fantasies for other speedsters. He was the pioneer who learned to harness the secret Speed Force, using its energy in ways no one else had managed before.
His speed is beyond what others can imagine, and he has demonstrated abilities that defy conventional understanding. For instance, he could drain an object of its speed, a power he later taught to other speedsters. He also has the unique ability to remove the Speed Force from someone, effectively freezing them like a statue.
Wally West has run many times faster than the speed of light and can execute the infinite mass punch, an attack potent enough to potentially eliminate any threat posed by the Justice League or those he confronts. He even managed to outrun Zoom’s ability to manipulate the flow of time.
Moreover, Wally gained the power to create duplicates of himself, all with his same impressive power level. In summary, Wally West is exceptionally overpowered among heroes, capable of dealing with most global threats single-handedly.
6) Swamp Thing
In a striking turn of events, Alan Moore significantly elevated the abilities of Swamp Thing, making him one of the first iconic characters to emerge from the United States comic book scene. By designating him as the Avatar of the Green, Moore transformed Swamp Thing into an almost indomitable embodiment of nature. The only way to truly impact this character was by influencing the energy frequency that his consciousness operated on; otherwise, he could shape any plant and grow it into whatever form he desired, while simultaneously controlling all vegetation in his surroundings. On multiple occasions, Swamp Thing has outmatched Superman, employing Earth’s power against Krypton’s mightiest citizen. This character has faced off against demons and malevolent forces of decay on a scale that most heroes scarcely comprehend. Swamp Thing’s power level transcends the stratosphere; it’s been quite some time since he faced any genuine peril.
5) Superman
Superman’s strength and dominance are as iconic as peanut butter and chocolate, a pairing that has endured for decades. Contrary to popular belief, Superman didn’t start out as an unstoppable force. Instead, his creators gradually increased the power of his adversaries, enabling him to grow stronger over time until he reached his peak in the Silver Age. Since then, Superman’s might has fluctuated within the main continuity, but he remains capable of shifting planets and possesses the potential to become a god-like entity capable of time travel and reality manipulation if exposed to enough yellow sunlight. The power of Superman adapts according to the demands of the storyline, sometimes depicting him as a moderately powerful hero and other times as one who could obliterate galaxies with a single sneeze (an incident that may have occurred in the Silver Age). Through it all, Superman has consistently faced and overcome the greatest threats, with his power levels evolving as necessary. In essence, Superman embodies the epitome of an overpowered hero, but fortunately, he’s also one of the finest.
4) Doctor Manhattan
On his Earth, Doctor Manhattan stood alone as the sole superpowered entity, mastering matter and physics to an extent that allowed him to dismantle objects with a mere glance. His fascination with the cosmos was insatiable, utilizing his abilities for investigations he’d never been able to undertake as a human. As Doctor Manhattan delved deeper into the mysteries of the universe, his power grew proportionately, granting him knowledge not only of the present and past but also of the future. By the end of ‘Watchmen,’ Doctor Manhattan had miraculously survived disintegration at a molecular level twice and chose to traverse the cosmos, possibly creating new humans in the process. This journey led him to the Bleed, a gateway to the DC Multiverse, where he evolved into his ultimate form. Employing his powers, he reshaped reality and time, eliminating certain elements from existence and using the multiverse as his laboratory, leading to the New 52. This level of power surpasses anything Doctor Manhattan had during ‘Watchmen,’ making him one of the most powerful entities to have traversed the DC Multiverse. Despite possessing god-like control over science, Doctor Manhattan yearned for the simple awe that the DC Multiverse inspired in others.
3) Darkseid
Darkseid embodies malevolence, a living entity that thrives on disorder and domination. His ultimate ambition in all existence is to seize control of the Anti-Life Equation, thereby subjugating every conscious being. He aspires to be the sole source of free will, binding everything to his dominion through his immense power. Darkseid is not just a physical entity of colossal might, capable of overpowering Earth’s superheroes singlehandedly in combat; he is also interwoven within the very fabric of the DC Multiverse. While it’s possible to slay his body, killing Darkseid is an impossible task due to his omnipresence. Anyone who abuses their power to inflict harm on others becomes a follower of Darkseid. He is always ready to be summoned for significant events in the DC universe. Darkseid is an ever-looming force of annihilation, and when he possesses the Anti-Life Equation, he approaches invincibility. Essentially, Darkseid is a villain unlike any other – an overwhelming destructive force the universe has never encountered before.
2) The Anti-Monitor
The Anti-Monitor set a precedent among villains by possessing the ability to annihilate entire universes. In the realm of comics, there are numerous villains with extensive body counts, but none compare to the Anti-Monitor’s destructive prowess. For eons, he systematically eradicated every universe he encountered, reducing the multiverse to a fraction of its original size in an attempt to accumulate enough matter to transform into anti-matter and obliterate all existence.
The Anti-Monitor surpasses even the strongest Kryptonians in power, and can spawn legions of minions from his shadow. He reigns over Qward, a universe where the Weaponeers craft weapons capable of annihilating universes with a single blast. His anti-matter waves have the ability to incinerate everything in their path. Essentially, the Anti-Monitor’s power is limited only by the demands of the story, making even the most formidable Marvel villains seem trivial.
While Galactus devours planets and consumes Celestials, the Anti-Monitor demonstrated the ability to destroy entire universes and engage in combat with the Spectre, a cosmic entity capable of altering reality, emerging victorious. This level of power is unprecedented, but that’s just a glimpse of what the Anti-Monitor can accomplish at full strength.
1) Perpetua
The intricate structure of the DC Multiverse is undeniably complex. It’s filled with diverse deities from different realms, such as the Presence, his angels, Lucifer, and his demons. Then there are the Endless, the New Gods of New Genesis and Apokolips, remnants of ancient wars among elder gods scattered across the multiverse. The Monitors, the Anti-Monitor, the World-Forger, the Gentry, the Empty Hand, the Great Darkness, and the mysterious Hands are also part of this cosmic tapestry. The Hands, creators of multiple universes, construct infinite clusters of space-time throughout existence.
One of these Hands, Perpetua, created a multiverse with the intention to conquer all others. She was imprisoned beyond the Source Wall by other Hands long ago but broke free when the Justice League breached the wall in “Justice League: No Exit.” Desiring control over her creation once more, Perpetua aligned herself with Lex Luthor, the Legion of Doom, and the Batman Who Laughs. Their objective was to spread chaos across the cosmos, compelling all beings to embrace darkness.
Perpetua possesses powers on a scale that can be challenging to comprehend, and it was only due to the efforts of countless beings that the DC Multiverse, along with the greater Omniverse, managed to endure Perpetua’s destructive force.
