Uncover the Hits and Misses of My Hero Academia Movies!

If an anime series becomes very well-liked, it’s likely that its movie adaptation will eventually come to cinemas. Anime franchises like Dragon Ball, Jujutsu Kaisen, Demon Slayer, and One Piece are just a few examples of series that have become box office hits, producing both original and compilation films. My Hero Academia has already released four unique movies within its shonen superhero universe, with each one premiering in theaters. Although these films have many positive aspects, there are also areas where improvement is needed.

Let’s reminisce about the journey of the “My Hero Academia” movie adaptations before we dive into discussing their advantages and disadvantages. The cinematic journey kicked off in 2018 with “My Hero Academia: Two Heroes”, which was followed by “My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising”, “My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission”, and most recently, “My Hero Academia: You’re Next”. These movies are set within the storyline of Deku and Class 1-A, so any characters or events depicted are considered part of the official continuity. Although the movie villains don’t appear in the main series, they did challenge Midoriya and his peers with some of their toughest battles.

My Hero Academia: What The Movies Do Right

In my viewpoint, the standout aspect of these films is the exceptional animation work by Studio BONES that breathes life into these side stories. Each fight sequence, be it against Wolfram, Nine, Flect, or Dark Might, is a testament to the dedication of this production house. The skillful choreography and fluid animation transform these battles into spectacles, making them among the finest in the series. The collateral damage in these fights almost resembles a dazzling fireworks display. Particularly, during the climactic battles of each film, Studio BONES truly shines, delivering stunning visuals that leave one awestruck.

In terms of offering additional content beyond the main storyline, these movies offer intriguing twists such as Midoriya passing on One For All to Bakugo for a decisive battle against Nine, or the introduction of an ominous “Evil All Might.” Moments like these might not have been included in the series proper but add substantial reasons for the movies’ existence. Furthermore, the films introduce compelling side characters like Giulio Gandini, Anna Scervino, Rody Soul, and Melissa Shield.

What’s more, the movie manages to balance this new content with a focus on its primary cast, ensuring that not only Deku, Bakugo, and Shoto Todoroki have their moment in the limelight, but also allowing the UA students and top-tier heroes an opportunity to shine as well.

My Hero Academia: What The Movies Do Wrong

One significant issue with many films lies in their length, as they often struggle to delve deeply into the profound ideas they introduce. For instance, movies like “Humarise” and “Dark Might” present intriguing concepts but fail to fully explore them due to time constraints. In “My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission”, for example, the villainous organization’s belief that Quirks are sinful and should be eradicated from society is an interesting notion, but there isn’t enough screen time dedicated to it. The movie also introduces a subplot involving Deku being framed for murder, which unfortunately gets overlooked in the film’s duration as well.

In terms of the narrative involving Dark Might, the concept of an Italian mob boss transformed by All Might’s ideals is intriguing, yet similar to Humarise in that it doesn’t allow fans of shonen genres to delve deeply into the character and his ambitions. The notion of confronting a villainous All Might is enticing, particularly when considering Deku’s intense affection for his mentor. Regrettably, My Hero Academia: You’re Next primarily offers only superficial treatment to this idea in its rush to reach epic battle scenes and conclude the story, rather than exploring it more fully.

As a die-hard fan of “My Hero Academia”, I can’t help but wonder if our favorite series will grace the big screen once more, given that there’s no official confirmation about the fifth film in the franchise yet. With season eight serving as the anime’s grand finale on television, it’ll certainly be intriguing to find out whether UA Academy has any further adventures waiting for us in the world of cinema after its small screen conclusion.
