Unlike most Zelda games set in Hyrule, this game is situated in Termina, a realm with Clock Town at its heart and inhabitants who bear striking resemblances to people Link encountered around Hyrule in Ocarina of Time. Canonically, Termina is one of several parallel universes, accounting for the similarities it shares with Hyrule. However, there are subtle hints within the game that suggest travel between these worlds might not be as difficult as one might assume.
Immediately following Ocarina of Time, as per Zelda’s instruction to return him to his childhood, Majora’s Mask begins with Link embarking on a quest to find Navi, the fairy companion given to him by the Great Deku Tree. This search for Navi proves challenging and eventually leads Link to Termina, a realm that bears similarities to Hyrule but possesses its own distinct ambiance. In this world, Link dedicates himself to averting the threat of a moon on a collision course with Termina.
There Are Multiple Paths Between Hyrule and Termina
Initially, we are aware that at least three individuals have made a journey from Hyrule to Termina on one occasion: Skull Kid, Link, and the Mysterious Mask Vendor. Given the enigmatic nature of the Mask Vendor, who appears to conceal many secrets – like how he obtained the Majora’s Mask originally – it’s not entirely unexpected that he might possess a means to move freely between different worlds.
In essence, you’ve got Skull Kid and Link, two characters who apparently journeyed from Hyrule into Termina via forest paths. It’s possible that Skull Kid may have traveled back and forth between the two worlds on more than one occasion. The history of Termina reveals a friendship between Skull Kid and the Four Giants, but it appears that Link first encounters him in Hyrule, or perhaps near the boundary of these realms. This encounter occurs after Skull Kid feels betrayed by the Giants’ supposed abandonment. Furthermore, Skull Kids are actually lost children originating from Hyrule’s enigmatic Lost Woods. All told, these details suggest a complex intertwining between Termina and Hyrule.
Besides these three characters, Link encounters some Non-Player Characters (NPCs) who speak of places or races from Hyrule, but there’s no evidence they exist within Termina as depicted by the game. For instance, a Goron brings up Dodongos, suggesting he might have visited Dodongo’s Cavern in Hyrule, or perhaps these creatures also inhabit Termina. Interacting with Tingle gives stronger hints that he’s been to Hyrule, as he identifies Link as a Kokiri – a species not mentioned in Termina except during conversations with Tingle.
What Does it Mean to Have Multiple Paths to Termina?
From an implication standpoint, having multiple avenues for travel between Termina and Hyrule merely serves as an intriguing side note within the broader Legend of Zelda narrative. While it could be fascinating to delve into these links in a future game, much like A Link Between Worlds, it’s probable that these theories will remain speculation only. Yet, maintaining the enigmatic nature of Termina and the means of accessing it contributes to the overall air of mystery surrounding Majora’s Mask.
