In less than four minutes into the latest Netflix series titled “Adolescence“, officers storm a tranquil residential street, executing an arrest on allegations of murder.
The individual in question is a 13-year-old boy named Jamie, who has been charged with the murder of his classmate Katie. As he is being taken away, his father Eddie (portrayed by Stephen Graham, also a co-creator and writer of the series) shouts, “He’s innocent! You’ve made a mistake!”
Throughout the four-episode British drama, the truth behind Jamie’s (Owen Cooper’s impressive debut role) actions is examined. The narrative unfolds from the day of his arrest to 13 months later as Jamie’s parents (Eddie and Christine Tremarco), detectives (Ashley Walters and Faye Marsay), and a psychologist (Erin Doherty) work diligently to uncover what transpired.
Netflix has produced several true crime series, but the story of Jamie is not solely based on one real-life person or case.
In an interview with Virgin Radio U.K. on March 16th, Graham shared his thoughts about two separate incidents he learned about through reading a newspaper article and watching the news. The first incident involved a young boy who fatally stabbed a girl, while the second occurred in another part of the country at a later time. Both instances left him deeply saddened. As a father, he couldn’t help but wonder about the growing issue of violence among young men in society today. It is worth noting that statistics from the U.K.’s Ministry of Justice show that juveniles aged 10 to 17 were responsible for approximately 17% of the nearly 18,500 cautions and convictions related to knife or weapon possession in England and Wales during the year ending in March 2023.
Graham is eager to explore this topic, as he mentioned in an interview with Netflix’s blog Tudum. One of the questions he intends to answer is, “What pressures do they encounter from their peers, online communities, and social media platforms?
The actor wanted viewers to focus more on Jamie’s actions rather than his parents’ actions, as it was crucial to convey that he came from a stable household. This approach also raised the question, ‘How well do parents truly understand their teenagers?'”
In addition,
“By highlighting Jamie’s stable upbringing, the actor aimed to divert attention away from his parents and towards Jamie’s actions. This choice also sparked the question, ‘How much do parents really know about what their teens are doing?’
In my perspective, it’s crucial to convey that Jamie hails from a secure home environment, allowing the audience to concentrate more on his actions rather than those of his parents. Here’s how I might phrase it in the first person:
“Reflecting on this, I often wonder if we as viewers sometimes jump to blame the parents too quickly when we hear such stories,” I recently shared with Rolling Stone U.K. “But then I began to ponder, ‘What if it’s not the parents who are at fault?'”
By adopting this perspective, we also raise a thought-provoking question: just how well do parents truly understand their teenagers’ actions?
As Graham explained to Tudum, “We could have created a drama revolving around gangs and knife crime, or about a teenager whose mother is an alcoholic or whose father is a violent abuser. However, our aim was for you to observe this family and think, ‘My goodness, this could be us!’ And what we’re dealing with here is an ordinary family’s worst nightmare.
Graham’s show Adolescence doesn’t provide a single solution for the issues it addresses, but rather serves as a call to collaborative action among parents, schools, society, and even social media platforms. As he explained on This Morning, raising children today requires input from all these sources because traditional methods may not be enough in this digital age. He’s encouraging us to discuss these matters openly, increasing our understanding of the challenges faced by adolescents today.
