If you’re fond of ’80s films, it’s likely that you’ve caught “The Karate Kid” at some point. This movie left an indelible mark on popular culture, with its influence still evident today through the spinoff series “Cobra-Kai” and the upcoming release “Karate Kid: Legends”. If you’re among those who watched the original film right up until the credits rolled, you might have spotted a curious acknowledgment at the end: “The title ‘The Karate Kid‘ has been used with the consent of DC Comics, Inc.”. Just like many others, you may have pondered over the connection between Superman and Daniel LaRusso. Is The Karate Kid secretly a superhero? Well, in a sense, yes and no.

It’s interesting to note that the universe where Batman and Green Lantern reside also hosts a Karate Kid, but it’s not the same character as Daniel-san from your memory. The reason DC Comics is mentioned in the credits of the iconic martial arts movie “The Karate Kid” is because the filmmakers were adamant about using that specific title for their project and sought permission from DC. Intriguingly, they received approval to use the name “Karate Kid” for the 1984 original film and its sequels, with the condition that a credit would be given at the end of the movie. The filmmakers accepted this arrangement with enthusiasm.
The unexpected success led to numerous adaptations of the Rocky-like film, including two sequels, a remake with Hilary Swank, a reboot featuring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan, an animated series, a challenging NES game, the TV series spinoff Cobra Kai, the upcoming legacy sequel Karate Kid: Legends, and many more spin-offs. It’s safe to say that DC Comics likely didn’t anticipate the immense popularity of The Karate Kid movie, overshadowing their own Karate Kid character.
Who Is DC’s Karate Kid?
To clarify, how does the DC’s version of The Karate Kid compare to his ’80s counterpart? Essentially, they are not similar in that regard. In one phrase, the DC Karate Kid delivers a hundredfold more powerful blows compared to Daniel LaRusso.
In the 31st century, there’s a superhero named Val Armorr who has achieved proficiency in every known martial art and even some combat styles that aren’t yet part of DC Comics’ current timeline. This character first appeared in Adventure Comics issue 346 (July 1966), marking the debut of Jim Shooter’s initial published story.
Without inherent powers, the Karate Kid is a comic book character known for feats surpassing those of an ordinary blackbelt. Val’s expertise in every martial art makes him capable of identifying the weakest spots in any item or material, enabling him to inflict severe damage on something as tough as a steel door with just one punch. His combat skills are so formidable that he was able to defeat Superboy in their first encounter solely through his skill. Beyond his incredible physical prowess, Karate Kid possesses an exceptionally disciplined mind, making him resistant to most forms of mental manipulation and hypnosis.
Even though The Karate Kid with his high kicks and wax-moving karate is widely recognized, Val Armorr has also made a significant mark. He appeared in various adaptations and updates of the Legion of Super-Heroes comic series, starting from season 2 in the 2006 animated version. Similarly, The Karate Kid was featured as a main character in the animated movie JLA Adventures: Trapped in Time, where he and Dawnstar accidentally thawed Lex Luthor in the 31st century.
The less famous DC’s Karate Kid, Val Armorr, has received action figures on occasion, but not nearly as many as his more recognized counterpart. This isn’t surprising since he is less known. Nevertheless, it demonstrates that Val Armorr does have dedicated fans. Unfortunately, with the last Legion of Super-Heroes series ending in 2021, Val Armorr is currently out of DC’s comic book scene. The question remains when and where we might see him again, but there are whispers that the Legion might reactivate soon, offering a glimmer of hope to fans of this hidden martial arts master.
In a short while, another Karate Kid movie titled “Karate Kid: Legends” will be gracing theaters on May 30th. Until that day, fans can satisfy their craving for the “Miyagi-verse” by revisiting Cobra Kai. At present, all six seasons of this series are available for streaming on Netflix.
